liuzhou Posted October 10, 2006 at 10:09 AM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 10:09 AM I just (accidentally) clicked on a wikipedia link, and to my surprise, just as I was about to hit stop, I noticed that it was going through. I am wiki unblocked. Can anyone confirm from anywhere else? Reaction to NK's bomb test? Quote
JackP Posted October 10, 2006 at 10:14 AM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 10:14 AM Here as well! Hurray! Quote

Craig Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:12 AM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:12 AM Very nice. I was expecting at least selective blocking of certain sites on wiki (like HR in china and Taiwan). But every site I’ve check so far hasn't been a problem. Quote
md1101 Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:17 AM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:17 AM that is awesome!! great to hear! finally a step foward after all the steps back in regards to censorship recently. hopefully itll last... is the article on the 'day/heavenly_peace_gate' viewable? Quote
liuzhou Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:35 AM Author Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:35 AM Don't get too excited! Wiki was always available.Even when it was "blocked". In the sad case that they block it again and this is just an abberation, feel free to PM me. It is so easy! Quote
md1101 Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:56 AM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:56 AM thanks liuzhou ill pm you should the need arise! but im also happy that the average chinese person (without your technical means) now has a little more information to look at that isnt tailored specifically for them if you know what i mean. roddy Posted October 10, 2006 at 12:12 PM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 12:12 PM True, but the simple fact of being able to just click on Google links rather than click on it, wait five minutes, think 'oh yeah, that doesn't work' . . . Quote
Jose Posted October 10, 2006 at 02:16 PM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 02:16 PM Chinese Wikipedia seems to remain blocked, though. That's what I have read in the village pump discussion section in Chinese Wikipedia. Anyway, it is good step in the right direction. I wonder if it is related to the current meeting of top leaders of the Party in Beijing. Quote
roddy Posted October 10, 2006 at 02:32 PM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 02:32 PM I doubt it's related to anything to be honest, except perhaps someone realising they're being a bit daft. And lets all remember that we've been here before Quote
Hero Doug Posted October 10, 2006 at 03:26 PM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 03:26 PM I can't even access it through anonymouse. Maybe someone can try this link for me and tell me if it's accessible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square Quote
babygodzilla Posted October 10, 2006 at 05:00 PM Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 05:00 PM i got thru to that page Quote
liuzhou Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:42 PM Author Report Posted October 10, 2006 at 11:42 PM Maybe someone can try this link for me and tell me if it's accessible. No problem. However, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989 goes nowhere. Quote
palindrome Posted October 11, 2006 at 12:19 AM Report Posted October 11, 2006 at 12:19 AM I'm very excited about this. I hope it lasts. It makes me want to go look up random stuff because I can. I was also excited to see that since the last time I was in Beijing the NY Times is unblocked too. Quote
imron Posted October 11, 2006 at 01:21 AM Report Posted October 11, 2006 at 01:21 AM The NY Times has been unblocked since just after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. Quote
Hero Doug Posted October 11, 2006 at 02:38 PM Report Posted October 11, 2006 at 02:38 PM Yeah, I can get it now, although it's slow. My net connection must have been unreliable the other day. Are they getting pressure from anywhere/anyone to loosen their grip on information? Quote
hughitt1 Posted October 11, 2006 at 06:45 PM Report Posted October 11, 2006 at 06:45 PM I know the Jimmy Wales was planning on making a trip sometime around now (he may have already gone) to try and talk with leaders and China, and get them to allow people to access the site. I didn't realize that NYTimes was unblocked- thats great! Anyone know if bbc news is still blocked? Keith Quote
hughitt1 Posted October 11, 2006 at 06:49 PM Report Posted October 11, 2006 at 06:49 PM So what is everyone's thoughts on the feasibility of China's attempts to censor internet content? They are doing a pretty darn good job now, with alot of people working around the clock to scan sites, etc. But with the number of people connected to the net growing as fast as it is (its going to pass U.S. later this year).. do you think they will be able to keep it up? What will be the turning point? Quote
