Student Protest

Don't worry, not that student protest.

Apologies for the lack of Signese over the last week - your humble correspondent was off in Hong Kong, where they have the habit of putting English next to all the Chinese, making the collection of Signese resources somewhat tricky.

However I did manage to find this one for you, so . . .

1) Where was the photo taken? I'm looking for a specific institution name.

2) There's maybe a bit of guesswork necessary here, but what do you think the cause of discontent is?

3) How long did it take you to figure out what direction to read in this time?

1. City University of Hong Kong

2. Not real sure, but it looks like someone (or a group of people) let a canteen get stolen. They were just standing idly by?

3. About 30 seconds. It got me again. :)

#3 was easy.

On the cause of discontent:

I presume 'will you stand by in silence while they steal the canteen' means the college dining hall is being closed down or handed over to a private business, etc.

My word, Jim, we are honoured by your presence.

I've added a larger version which includes some surrounding messages - you may be able to scour this for further clues.

So CityU students also got the direction wrong? No wonder they are ranked low. I am really disappointed.

Hint -

will you remain silent and just let the Canteen rob you?

Oh yes, that makes much more sense than my suggestion. I had the 任由 wrong :(

Sigh. I was really wondering how you know the answer to #1 so easily. I misread 城大 as 成大, and then managed to get 成大 confused with 长大, so I read the first line as "adult customers". Sigh....

You just need to get waaaaay off the beaten path, there certainly are places in HK with no English signs. Tai-O, IIRC, I think didn't have many English signs.

It was a combination of experience with seeing the pattern X + 大 to mean some university, and Google. :) Yeah, perhaps it's cheating, but I don't think I can be expected to know the official English name of every college/university in China off the top of my head.
