teachinator Posted August 31, 2006 at 04:16 PM Report Posted August 31, 2006 at 04:16 PM I was just reviewing my admission notice to BLCU and I realized that it states that I have been accepted into the "college of intensive Chinese language." I applied for the regular, 20-hour-per-week course, not the 30-hour intensive. I'm going to be taking the 12-week course that starts September 14. How hard do you think it will be to get them to sign me into for the regular course if they "accepted" me for the intensive? Can anyone comment about the relative rigors of the two levels, anyway? I'm curious, but I don't think 6 hours in class per day plus homework is for me. And by the way, could someone translate "intensive course" and "regular course" into Chinese (characters okay) for me? Thanks! Quote
Shadowdh Posted September 1, 2006 at 01:17 PM Report Posted September 1, 2006 at 01:17 PM I was in the intensive college for the 6 week program over summer and it was only 20 hours a week... the intensive college is just a part of BLCU as I understand it... as for the characters for intensive its 速成 (speeded up educational program)... dont know the other sorry... teachinator Posted September 1, 2006 at 03:37 PM Author Report Posted September 1, 2006 at 03:37 PM The app form I filled out says "regular courses (20 hours/week)" and "intensive courses (30 hours/week)". I requested the regular courses. I suppose it's possible that being admitted into the "school for intensive Chinese language" doesn't mean they expect you to take the intensive courses. Maybe they just call the short term that. At this point, I guess I will just have to go and do the best I can to straighten it out there. Quote
Shadowdh Posted September 1, 2006 at 04:39 PM Report Posted September 1, 2006 at 04:39 PM From what I gather the college of intensive study does have regular (20 hours a week) and intense (30 hours a week) courses... I think that your supposition is correct... you attend that college because you are on a short course (but I could be wrong about that)... I would wait and see... when you get there you may find its as you wish... Quote
danier11 Posted September 2, 2006 at 11:02 AM Report Posted September 2, 2006 at 11:02 AM teachamajig... I did the same thing. On my application it says the same and I signed up for the regular courses. It's just, in my opinion, what they call it and not necessarily meaning that we are taking the "intensive course" a.k.a. 30 hour course. Don't worry about it. If it does happen that your screwed...then you won't be the only one. Quote
teachinator Posted September 14, 2006 at 12:38 PM Author Report Posted September 14, 2006 at 12:38 PM I guess the short-term courses are all part of the "college of intensive Chinese training." When I got to the registration desk, the printout correctly came up with the tuition for 20 hours per week, meaning I was signed up for the regular 12-week session and not the intensive. It's a bit confusing that they use the same term in two ways. But I went with another student who had signed up for the 30-hour-a-week course but was hoping to change to the regular course. In the end she didn't even ask, figuring they wouldn't allow it after she got her pre-printed "bill." When we got to the last step of registration, I was given a one-page flyer about various trips I could sign up to take, two of them surprisingly during non-vacation weeks. My companion asked for one, too, but the clerk said "it's not for you." We could only guess that intensive course students are expected to go to class every day and not to do anything as frivolous as taking side trips. Quote
