Taibei Posted August 31, 2006 at 10:48 AM Report Posted August 31, 2006 at 10:48 AM In recognition of the 95th(!) birthday today of John DeFrancis, Sino-Platonic Papers is rereleasing Schriftfestschrift: Essays in Honor of John DeFrancis on His Eightieth Birthday. Previously, this important compilation, which runs more than 250 pages, was available only in a printed edition priced at US$35. The fifteenth-anniversary edition, however, is being released for free as a PDF (note: 15 MB!). The much-discussed essay Why Chinese Is So Damn Hard is from this compilation. Many of the other essays lean more toward traditional academic fare; but there's a little something there for most every taste. For more details, see Festschrift for John DeFrancis now available for free. Quote

roddy Posted August 31, 2006 at 03:12 PM Report Posted August 31, 2006 at 03:12 PM Downloading it now, though not sure if I'll actually get around to reading it in the near future. Thanks for the tip. Wonder if anyone will ever write something with a title like "The Topical Function of Preverbal Locatives and Temporals in Chinese" for my birthday . . . Quote
mikelove Posted September 1, 2006 at 09:06 PM Report Posted September 1, 2006 at 09:06 PM (edited to delete duplicate Schriftfestschrift reference, apologies all) Also on the free e-book front, I've recently acquired (at Strand Books, for $1) and am in the process of digitizing a copy of Ruth Lor Malloy's "Travel Guide to the People's Republic of China" from 1975. Which is a fascinating historical document, to say the least - if you think the visa process is complicated now you should see what it was like back then. Ms. Malloy has graciously agreed to let me post the e-text for free on my website once I'm finished scanning it, but I could use some help with proofreading, so if anyone's willing to volunteer (in exchange for having your name mentioned on the finished page) send me an e-mail. I'll post another message here when the finished copy is ready. Quote
pattifranklin Posted September 2, 2006 at 01:13 AM Report Posted September 2, 2006 at 01:13 AM I'm looking forward to seeing the finished document! Let me know if you need me to become a volunteer. Quote
roddy Posted September 2, 2006 at 01:48 AM Report Posted September 2, 2006 at 01:48 AM Merged two threads on the same topic, although you're welcome to post a new one abour your scanning efforts, Mike. Quote
