Hofmann Posted October 18, 2008 at 12:36 PM Report Share Posted October 18, 2008 at 12:36 PM I tried out Popup Chinese. It's pretty fast and I guess it does what it should. It has a rather small vocabulary though. I like Pera-kun most of all popup plugins, although Pera-kun has its own problems, such as a crappy version of CEDICT. Luobot Posted October 18, 2008 at 02:52 PM Report Share Posted October 18, 2008 at 02:52 PM I tried out Popup Chinese. It's pretty fast and I guess it does what it should. It has a rather small vocabulary though. I haven't tried it as I haven't seen an answer to my security question. I like Pera-kun most of all popup plugins, although Pera-kun has its own problems, such as a crappy version of CEDICT. I think we've established that Perakun gets an automated ADSO update. Possibly the conversion / import process from adso is defective? In the meantime, I've gone back to using the 0.2.2 version, as it provides better definitions, and it highlights all the characters it's defining, which the new version doesn't do. Perakun should be fine if it used the current version of CEDICT (released 2008-10-12 with 78,413 entries). Even better if it allowed users to import their own file. I'm getting tempted to try ABCinChina's CEDICT formatted for Kingsoft Powerword 2007.
atsherrill Posted October 13, 2009 at 05:28 PM Report Share Posted October 13, 2009 at 05:28 PM I just came across ChinesePera-Kun last week. It may not be perfect, but it's definitely useful. I'm enjoying using it. I just installed version 1.05 from http://perapera.wordpress.com. Just one suggestion: Would it be possible to hide the mouse pointer when the definition appears? It gets in the way of the character I'm trying to read. Good luck--looking forward to the next version.
Neil_H Posted October 16, 2009 at 10:29 PM Report Share Posted October 16, 2009 at 10:29 PM Will there be a version that works with Firefox 3.53?
gato Posted October 17, 2009 at 11:11 AM Report Share Posted October 17, 2009 at 11:11 AM You can download a version that works with Firefox 3.5 at http://perapera.wordpress.com. Download that and open the file with Firefox, and you can install it. Firefox add-ons are required to have a version control number, and every time Firefox's version number goes up, the version number in the add-on has to be updated as well, even though there is no change in the software code. It just requires changing the version in the setup file. It's kind of annoying.

numble Posted November 2, 2009 at 12:40 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 12:40 AM Are there any popup translators out there that use the latest CEDICT version (or allow you to update?)? I am constantly frustrated to find things are in CEDICT but aren't in Perakun. CEDICT has nearly 110k dictionary entries nowadays...
numble Posted November 18, 2009 at 07:57 AM Report Share Posted November 18, 2009 at 07:57 AM Perapera-kun 2.0 has been released! It now uses CC-CEDICT. http://perapera.wordpress.com/
guanfei Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:08 AM Report Share Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:08 AM I've installed firefox 3.6.4 and perapera-kun 2.1 and for some reason it doesn't work for me. It has a lookup bar and options click box at the bottom left but the 'select a language' area is all grey. I have no other language tools installed on my browser. Any ideas? gato Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:13 AM Report Share Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:13 AM The dictionary is grayed out because the default install does not include a dictionary file. You have to go to the perapera.wordpress.com site listed above to download a dictionary file.
guanfei Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:20 AM Report Share Posted June 27, 2010 at 07:20 AM thanks for the quick reply, i found the solution and came back here post the information you just gave me. -.- the second part of the extention is here at http://perapera.wordpress.com/chinese/ personally i hope future versions could add something like chinese [select] / [download dictionary] japanese [select] / [download dictionary] korean [select] / [download dictionary] because it wasn't very clear what the problem was i had to google lots. -.- edit: i had trouble getting the links to load (from the mainland) from wordpress link extensions so here is the extracted links needed.. (main add-on) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3349 (chinese-english) http://downloads.mozdev.org/peraperakun/ChineseEnglishDictionary1.0.xpi (japanese-english) http://polarcloud.com/rikaichan/#rcxdict
