I have the official Beijing busmap and routeplanner. If only I were smart enough to understand it. Anyone with better Mandarin knowledge than me is welcome to borrow and decypher it.

The 22 southbound will also take you to the shopping center of Xidan.

I think the 726 and 826 southbound both take you to Qianmen eventually. The 826 northbound also takes you to the Summer Palace, but runs a road or two south of the 726 so doesn't take you to Wudaokou - except some 'express' versions of the 826, which will. There are way more 726s anyway.

815 southbound will take you past Gulou (very near to Yandai Xiejie(sp?) and Houhai, then past the north end of Nanluoguxiang. The 810 will take you to the south end after it goes past the north end of Beihai (it also takes you past the big yellow 日昌 restaurant (Otto's in English) which is basically a massive rowdy food hall with efficient service and English menus - chicken wings come recommended,we got through three plates last time. But enough about food)

From the south gate heading west you can get the (I think, double check) 834 to Weigongcun Xikou, where the Weigongcun Sculpting in Time is situated - same as the Wudaokou one, but generally quieter and less foreign. I think in the other direction it more or less follows the route of the 810. I also think that both the 810 and 834 will eventually take you past Sanlitun.

If you just want a quick run south to get to Xinjiekou, the 22, 726 or 826 from the east gate will do. However, Jishuitan qiao is often a traffic nightmare, and if you power walk you'll probably beat the bus.

Additional on the 104 - it'll also take you to Purple Bamboo Garden, Zizhuyuan, just past Carrefour - could do both in one trip.

The 'I think's in there are genuine - check before you get lost . . .

If you enjoy having you personal space while taking the bus you will not find it on 726! It's almost always completely packed during the day (although the ticket lady seems to find her way around somehow). I know this from when I was studying at BNU.

However the 726 bus always gets you just where you want to go, either direction from BNU.

Hey, thanks for the thread and for the credit, though, to be fair, I only knew about Carrefour and IKEA thanks to Roddy. I WILL add, however, that the 104 South will also take you out to and around Chedaogou.

Also, if you take the 22 South to Qianmen, you can catch the 1 Express into the far south of Beijing (though what you'd be doing there is anyone's guess).

the 731 and the 302 will take you from North 3rd Ring road to the South Gate of Chaoyang Park, passing by Gongti (workers Stadium, Vics, Mics etc).

Make a left upon exiting the East Gate, walking North until you hit the 3rd Ring road. Make a left and walk for 100-200 meters and there will be a bus stop. This is not the one you want. There will be a pedestrian overpass, walk up it, and then walk down the first ramp on your right side (you'll only walk about 10 meters on the overpass) and you'll be at the bust stop you need to be (it's directly on the third ring road)

Interactive Bus Maps

This is the website already mentioned above, but for those with more basic Chinese knowledge this link won't require any looking for the bus maps.

What I found especially nice is the ruler feature on the left hand side, which makes the varying scales this map is drawn at no problem. You can use the ruler to find out exactaly how far it is the old fashioned way, by foot.

In addition I found this subway time thing which is also nice:

I've been using these two to get an idea as to how far away I could really have an apartment and still be able to comfortably commute. Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the info!

I've been using www.mapbar.com for directions and it's pretty good but sometimes it's hit or miss. It's good for large landmarks/popular destinations though. Keep up the info exchange =)
