fulgentius Posted September 16, 2006 at 05:18 PM Report Posted September 16, 2006 at 05:18 PM Hi, I'm in my second semester of Mandarin and I'm having trouble finding something to watch that will help me with my listening skills. I mean, I like anime for instance, so if I was learning Japanese I'd just watch a lot of anime. I haven't found anything in Mandarin to be obsessed with, that I can just watch all the time and improve my language skills -- but I know there's something out there and I just haven't found it yet. I tend to like darker, witty, or more off-beat stories. I tried watching "Mars" a while ago but I lost interest after a while as it was a little too soapy for my taste. If anyone has any ideas for shows I might like (and they don't have to be regular TV shows really, anything will do), I'd be obliged! All I need is: 1) in fairly standard Mandarin, 2) available English subtitles, 3) available for rent or download (I only know 300 characters now, so websites in Mandarin won't help me right now), 4) something dark and/or witty that's not too terribly soap-opera-like. Thanks! Quote
Moose Posted October 26, 2006 at 01:49 AM Report Posted October 26, 2006 at 01:49 AM Hmm I'm not sure if you would consider this being too "soapy" but have you tried The Outsiders 鬥魚 It's about 3 high schoolers involved in a gang and a good girl who fell in love with one of the guys it focuses a lot on the gang stuff so it isn't too sappy It's in standard mandarin except there's some taiwanese slang you can find subtitles and downloads for the clips at d-addicts.com hope this helps ^^ Quote
