wai ming Posted September 20, 2006 at 01:35 PM Report Share Posted September 20, 2006 at 01:35 PM How would you say "to test one's patience" (or "to try one's patience") in Chinese? My dictionary actually has as an example: You're trying my patience! = 你在考验我的耐心! but that sounds rather... literal Is there a better way to say it? Yang Rui Posted September 21, 2006 at 02:03 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 at 02:03 AM For "you're trying my patience" i once heard a parent say to one of my friends: “一个人的耐心是有限制的” I suppose she was implying that this limit was about to be reached and my friend should stop testing it. But that doesn't really help with a general verb "to try one's patience"...
Quest Posted September 21, 2006 at 03:23 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 at 03:23 AM “一个人的耐心是有限制的” If you had to use that, I would change 心 to 性 and take out the 制.
FSO Posted September 21, 2006 at 06:16 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 at 06:16 AM I've always translated "to try one's patience" as. . . . . . "学中文"!
semantic nuance Posted September 21, 2006 at 07:20 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 at 07:20 AM I would use 人的忍耐是有限度的. Hope it helps!
Yang Rui Posted September 21, 2006 at 07:33 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 at 07:33 AM Thanks Quest - i should probably have pointed out that i was reaching back to a 3 year-old memory so some inaccuracy could have crept in.
