seansutton Posted March 14, 2004 at 09:02 AM Author Report Posted March 14, 2004 at 09:02 AM In response to my original post, Anyone out there know of schools that will teach Russian part-time and admit foreigners? Any contact info and city names would be great. I know they must be out there, but have almost no online links that I have been able to find. I am not being city specific because I am looking at all of China, I am simply looking for some real address', phone numbers, or web address'. I have tried all of the simple methods like Heilongjiang Uni and such, but they simply are not in the business of teaching foreigners Russian part-time. IF anyone knows of a program in ANY CITY in China that offers courses to foreigners and you have some contact info, it would much appreciated. Also I dont really want to go bugging Russian students studying in China for the same reason that I hate Chinese students coming to me and saying "Lets be friends, I want to practice my English." Thanks for any info you might have in advance. Quote

smithsgj Posted March 15, 2004 at 01:26 AM Report Posted March 15, 2004 at 01:26 AM What has English got to do with it? He speaks Chinese and still knows some Russian, he wants to brush up so he doesn't forget it but he lives and works in China. 39deg if you or any Chinese person lived in Taiwan or England and you wanted to sign up for a part-time course in Japanese (for example) there would be absolutely no problem. Why is it a problem in China. It is strange though that Sean doesn't mind which city. Don't you have a job, and a base? Quote

seansutton Posted March 17, 2004 at 12:53 PM Author Report Posted March 17, 2004 at 12:53 PM Thanks for most of your help. Other than one not so helpful post. The truth of it is I am in Tianjin at the moment and I thoroughly unimpressed with the city. I lived in the NE for 3 years, but find that the dongbei was much more interesting than Tianjin. I would never recommend somebody come here. The pollution is quite bad and it's quite dirty. It makes Shenyang look like a garden city. Also people in the NE are much more friendly. Tianjin has been called the biggest countryside in China by some of the waidi people in Tianjin. So I am coming to the end of a contract and am leaving my options open as to where I want to go. That is why I am saying any city is ok. I am looking for either a school that teaches Russian to Chinese in Chinese that will let a foreigner join the class or for a Russian speaker in the area that is interested in making a little extra money. lastly I know that the post is a little strange, but I think it is a rather strange request actually given the Chinese opinion about Russians and Russian. Thanks, Quote

roddy Posted March 19, 2004 at 01:50 AM Report Posted March 19, 2004 at 01:50 AM Cometrue, 39DegN, if you haven't got anything useful to say, why say anything? Sean - I think finding a school that will teach you Russian wouldn't be too difficult - the foreign language universities for example, will all have Russian courses and be happy to take your inflated international student fees. However, there's no way they'll be set up for part-time courses. The training centers set up by the universities (or independent ones) may be a better bet. This page has some info about one university - scroll down to the bottom for what might be a part-time course. I think your best bet is to check the local papers where English language schools advertise - they'll also have adverts for schools teaching other foreign languages, though they're much less common. Quality of teaching isn't likely to be great though. In your situation, I would be more inclined to set up a financial / exchange deal with a Russian student. Good luck Roddy Quote
ala Posted March 19, 2004 at 03:57 AM Report Posted March 19, 2004 at 03:57 AM Try Shanghai. 上海外国语大学附属外国语学校 The Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS) has language programs, including Russian, for those who have already graduated from college. Chinese link: http://www.sfls.cn/ch/ch_index.asp (it's also in English). They have a forum that you might want to check out also. But I'm pretty sure they can offer what you are looking for. 华东师范大学 East China Normal University I believe has a Russian Studies Center as well as Russian language course offerings. I am certain one can work out a parttime program as well (when you mean part-time do you mean just part-time student or like evening classes?). Part-time student shouldn't be a problem; and large universities also have evening courses. You should contact 华东师范 directly for more information. http://www.ecnu.edu.cn/englishban/s4.htm Chinese link: http://www.ecnu.edu.cn/ Also try the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade and maybe even Fudan. There are also many private language institutes in Shanghai (lots of Shanghainese want to go abroad), though most are English and Japanese. But Russian isn't that unpopular. The Russian consulate general in Shanghai (pictured above) might also help you out. 200080, Shanghai, Huangpu Road, 20 Phone: +86 21 6324-8383, 6324-2682 Telex: (85) 337020 Fax: +86 21 6306-9982 E-mail: consul@online.sh.cn Plus, Shanghai is a great city to work in (I'm biased naturally ). Don't worry too much about the dialect either, as everyone there can also speak Mandarin fluently and clearly, without the r r r r r too. http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/ Pretty informative with forums, guides, photos, classifieds, etc. Check out for classifieds, cultural events, nightlife, guides, etc: http://www.thatsmagazines.com/home/index.asp?location=sh Quote
seansutton Posted March 19, 2004 at 06:57 AM Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 at 06:57 AM Cheers guys! Your information is great! I was afraid a place like Shanghai might be a little too south, but I was wrong. Thanks again! Quote
ala Posted March 20, 2004 at 03:34 AM Report Posted March 20, 2004 at 03:34 AM Hehe not too south at all, one of my cousins in Shanghai studied Russian and later went to Moscow for a couple of years. She's now in Austria though. I on the otherhand went with English and later Japanese..., so I completely understand your desire to maintain the other language. Wish you the best of luck. Quote
