studentyoung Posted October 3, 2006 at 07:06 AM Report Posted October 3, 2006 at 07:06 AM does anyone know what is the origin, or the context of this term - 德智体美劳全面发展 - "all around development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labour education"? You might get a lot of contexts of this德智体美劳全面发展 in www.baidu.com . does it have something to do with education reform in China? Yes. The current Chinese educational system is so called exam-oriented education. But it is very clear that this kind of education can’t develop children in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labor aspects. In a word, it can’t develop children all around (but only exam animals) as our society expects. And the current education reform in China is trying to help children develop all round in moral, physical, aesthetics and labor aspects. Thanks! Quote
ayala Posted October 3, 2006 at 09:13 AM Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 at 09:13 AM thanks for your reply, it helps a lot! few more question... does those standars are relatively new to the chinese education system? 5,6 years or more? saw lots of information regarding this topic but can't tell if it relates to a new reform or if it's a well established concept. thanks again! ayala Quote
CW_Angel Posted October 3, 2006 at 11:06 AM Report Posted October 3, 2006 at 11:06 AM It's not new, at least over 50 years since the PRC was founded Quote

Quest Posted October 3, 2006 at 11:18 AM Report Posted October 3, 2006 at 11:18 AM The communists love slogans.... and they love to put them in red banners with unaesthetic square font. Quote
ayala Posted October 3, 2006 at 10:00 PM Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 at 10:00 PM many thanks guys! one more question - what does 劳 means in this context? is it being ready to work hard? diligence? something to do with socialist responsibility? Quest - while in china, my favorite red banner slogan was - 安全第一。。。really shows, ah? anyway, never noticed this one. thanks again! Quote
studentyoung Posted October 4, 2006 at 02:03 AM Report Posted October 4, 2006 at 02:03 AM one more question - what does 劳 means in this context? is it being ready to work hard? diligence? something to do with socialist responsibility? In fact, 劳 in this context means housework. A long time ago, a lot of Chinese educational experts recognize that training children to master some basic housework (like cleaning one’s bedroom, cooking, washing clothes, buying some daily goods, etc) can help them set up independence in their mind for their whole life and set up a healthier and happier family in their future. Just as the famous educational expert Mr. 陶行知 says in his “Song of self-support自立歌”, “Drop your own sweat, eat your own bread, and do your own business yourself whenever you can.. Living a parasitic life by depending on others, good lucks or ancestors will not lead you to the right way to be a real man. 滴自己的汗,吃自己的饭,自己的事情自己干。靠人、靠天、靠祖上,不算好汉。” Thanks! Quote
长安一片月 Posted October 4, 2006 at 02:31 AM Report Posted October 4, 2006 at 02:31 AM it might has something to do with the education reform. but it is rarely referred nowadays.Things are changing very fast."德智体" was originally Mao's idea. After his death, in early 80s, "美"and "劳" were put on. It seems that the concept of "德智体美劳" is past, and they will have more slogans to replace. Quote
