Seems like online dating exists for all kinds of different people - do the Chinese use online dating to meet someone and which ones are used all over the world by the Chinese?

Yes, they do. It's more orientated towards finding people to marry than people to date, but there's still a lot out there. Baihe.com I know is one of the biggest, but there are many - look for keywords like 交友 and 婚姻 on search engines or the major portals and you'll find the sites. That's for mainland China. Internationally I don't know. Asiafriendfinder is a very big one, but not specifically Chinese.

funnily enough, the google ad displayed when i was reading an email in chinese just now was for zhiji.com, which allows you to search for people looking for 亲密关系 - literally intimate relationships.

i'm not sure exactly what the connotations of that term are in chinese though...

I don't think there is much difference between 亲密关系 and "intimate relationships". It can be as intimate as people (those who are involved) can make it.

In my experience, QQ is widely used to find relationships,and many people will ask you for your QQ number and be surprised if you don't have one or only have an email address.

Chinese QQ, it was designed mostly for Asian users in all parts of Asia, now around the world. Although, I sometimes, asking me to get a QQ id number, because already using msn, skype, aim, and sometimes gtalk in my opinion, this is far as I go. I do occasionally use both MSN/ skype to connect with some people in China. It was very nice, not a online dating, but to learn from each other from two countries; compare and contrast.

By the way, I heard people who are crazy about certain good luck numbers, serious buyers are willing to buy QQ ID numbers: 666666, 888888, 999999, 777777. Something like this.

yup, same with driver's licenses and apartment numbers...

In the US, people still have their own favorite numbers, but not crazy enough to buy all the numbers. The only things, I can think of buying their favorite number is from the Lotto tickets; hey what is the chances of 1:1,000,000.
