I would like to go to the U.S. for about 5 weeks over the winter holiday. I vaguely recall that airfare at that time is relatively cheap, and in past years have been able to get a round trip ticket for about US$ 625. I recently searched online and the lowest price I found was US$ 1157. What gives? Is it because of the cost of fuel? Or is it because the winter rates have not been released yet?

When are the cheapest days to fly?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheapest days to fly are Monday through Thursday. After December 10th or so, fares tend to go up quite a bit. So you might need to leave before that date.

Flying out of Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong tend to be cheapest.

Looking at elong.net, I see an airfare for 4570 RMB from Shanghai to SF, roundtrip. 5140 to NY. I doubt those prices include taxes and fuel fees, but I'd be surprised if taxes and fuel fees added up to be $500 US or so...
