daxia Posted October 18, 2006 at 02:44 AM Report Posted October 18, 2006 at 02:44 AM I'm going to BeiJing the 26th oct and I am going to stay for a week. I was wondering what kind of clothes I should bring. I have never been there before so I dont really know much about the climate. Will I have to buy a thick winter jacket or will a "normal" jacket do ? Are only wearing a Sweater and some light pants totally out of the question ? Is it enough to wear normal Jogging shoes or will I have to buy something else ? I checked out the weather report and it pretty much says the temperature varies from 3 C to 15 C, but I dont really know how cold that is. Also, I will be going to the GreatWall one of the days. Is there anything I should know before going there ? Thanks Quote
adrianlondon Posted October 18, 2006 at 03:58 AM Report Posted October 18, 2006 at 03:58 AM It'll be a bit chilly. Normal trousers and shoes will be fine. Trainers (or something else with decent grip) for playing around on the Great Wall. A sweater and light jacket will be ok, although if you're walking around a lot in the late evening or early morning, a pair of gloves may come in handy. That way you can still walk around eating and drinking stuff from the local markets without your fingers freezing. Make sure the gloves are washable if you follow that advice ;) Quote

adrianlondon Posted October 19, 2006 at 02:19 AM Report Posted October 19, 2006 at 02:19 AM I've not experienced a Winter here yet, but from all accounts the best thing to wear when going out in January is ... a taxi. Quote
heifeng Posted October 19, 2006 at 02:40 AM Report Posted October 19, 2006 at 02:40 AM Beijing weather in the winter is relatively cold & DRY!!! If you are coming out here in the fall/winter just keep that in mind if you have sensitive skin, bring a good moisterizer (if you are concerned you can't buy what you want out here). Also, FYI, your hair will probably go crazy with static too! In terms of clothing, I already started wearing my thicker fall jacket, but no hat or scarf yet. For the greatwall keep in mind it will be windy. Last winter was considered a mild winter and only really snowed 2 times. This year might be colder. It's only waiting for a bus that is slightly cold, on the bus or subway you'll be roasting....I was only really ^&*(&^*& cold in Beijing once last year (setting off fireworks late night during Chinese new year) and thought maybe my feet where going slightly numb. Take a TAXI? What?!? Most time you don't need to take a taxi due to weather in Beijing...it doesn't really reach super extremes here... Quote
babygodzilla Posted October 19, 2006 at 04:46 AM Report Posted October 19, 2006 at 04:46 AM 15 degrees might sound cold but really its not that cold when the sun is out. and the sun is still gonna be out for a while, altho we had overcast a couple days back. so u should take into account whether its sunny or not, dont just look at the number. just my $.02 Quote
ipsi() Posted October 20, 2006 at 10:47 PM Report Posted October 20, 2006 at 10:47 PM Is it particularly windy in Beijing? It's not so bad if its just cold, but if it's cold and windy, then that just sucks... Quote
heifeng Posted October 21, 2006 at 05:20 AM Report Posted October 21, 2006 at 05:20 AM Is it particularly windy in Beijing? It's not so bad if its just cold, but if it's cold and windy, then that just sucks... YES! At times it can be extremely windy, so if you take the the wind chill factor into account it will definitely seem colder than it is! Last Nov/Dec it was ^&*&*( windy, and then in spring with the sandstorms it's windy again. It's good to have scarf with you or a cloth dusk mask type thingy with you, especially if you happen to be where there is alot of construction and loose dirt swirling around! I don't think the weather really sucks here, it was basically what I expected--except for the dryness! Quote
