Quest Posted October 24, 2006 at 11:28 PM Report Share Posted October 24, 2006 at 11:28 PM I am sure many of you are aware of this, I just wanted to point it out to those who aren't. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2864/ How effective is it in getting through the great firewall? atitarev Posted October 24, 2006 at 11:44 PM Report Share Posted October 24, 2006 at 11:44 PM Very interesting, Quest. I am not in China but I wonder if usage of this plug-in may become punishable in China.
roddy Posted October 25, 2006 at 07:36 AM Report Share Posted October 25, 2006 at 07:36 AM The list of sites it covers isn't very extensive, though perhaps it will get longer. Basically what it seems to do is automate url changing - ie when wikipedia was blocked, you could still get to the same content on other urls. This extension will do that automatically. So it's not making any content accessible - it's just making getting to it a bit easier.
roddy Posted March 21, 2007 at 06:38 AM Report Share Posted March 21, 2007 at 06:38 AM Been using this for the last few weeks. Seems fine, only really comes in handy for wikipedia - saves you having to rewrite the url yourself, any wiki link you click on automatically gets sent through a web proxy. Handy little add-on. roddy Posted March 21, 2007 at 02:47 PM Report Share Posted March 21, 2007 at 02:47 PM Strangely it doesn't seem to work for a couple of sites I would have expected it to - blogspot and the bbc. Not a major issue, but it seems it should be quite straightforward to add it to the list - if you can figure out how. Tools > Addons > Gladder > Options > Help tells you to "clicking on the domain name item of context menu of status button" - but I cannot for the life of me figure out what that actually means. Any idea? No wait, I've just sussed it. Bottom right corner of your browsers there's a little 'wall and ladder' icon. Right click when failing to access a site, select the domain name, and that will automatically add that domain to the list and it'll be proxied in future. Handy. gougou Posted April 1, 2007 at 04:01 PM Report Share Posted April 1, 2007 at 04:01 PM The automatic redirection wasn't working for me until I downloaded an update to version 1.0.0 yesterday (or was it today, I forget). Working just fine now. So if somebody else had trouble with it before as well, you might want to give it another try.
trien27 Posted April 1, 2007 at 09:37 PM Report Share Posted April 1, 2007 at 09:37 PM I only download add-ons for Firefox only when I'm using Linux. I never download anything in Windows, of all those damn problems. I have to wait until I finished using Windows before I download it in Linux. Sorry in advance if this offends anyone. roddy Posted April 2, 2007 at 12:59 AM Report Share Posted April 2, 2007 at 12:59 AM Anyone offended by trien's OS preferences? I find the automatic redirection a bit shaky, although the latest version is better. It doesn't always kick in if you are clicking on a link, but if you then hit return in the address bar to load again it'll work. Is anyone using this getting Firefox's script time-out message (not the standard web timeout) when trying to access blogspot? Or on any other sites? onebir Posted July 14, 2007 at 12:20 PM Report Share Posted July 14, 2007 at 12:20 PM My (Chinese) flatmates are very excited about being able to read the BBC news in Chinese so they can actually find out wtf is going on in their own country... cdn_in_bj Posted July 16, 2007 at 02:38 AM Report Share Posted July 16, 2007 at 02:38 AM I find the automatic redirection a bit shaky, although the latest version is better. It doesn't always kick in if you are clicking on a link, but if you then hit return in the address bar to load again it'll work. I've noticed this too - what I was doing was right-clicking on the ladder to uncheck the site, and then rechecking it. I'll have to try your method when I get home. cdn_in_bj Posted January 20, 2008 at 12:48 AM Report Share Posted January 20, 2008 at 12:48 AM I find the automatic redirection a bit shaky It seems that this is greatly improved in the latest version - I have not noticed any problems at all. bottledpoetry Posted February 2, 2008 at 04:33 PM Report Share Posted February 2, 2008 at 04:33 PM hey everybody I know this thread hasn't been written in for a while, but I was curious to see if anyone has found a way to access wenxuecity.com with gladder (or any other proxy type thing for that matter). Thanks!
imron Posted February 3, 2008 at 12:55 AM Report Share Posted February 3, 2008 at 12:55 AM I have no problem accessing it through a private proxy. Have a read of this thread, which discusses some of the various different options available for getting around the blocks.
gougou Posted February 3, 2008 at 01:08 AM Report Share Posted February 3, 2008 at 01:08 AM No problem with gladder, either, although it doesn't work with all of their proxies. Anonymouse, which doesn't scramble addresses, does not work. I tried privacystart (which does scramble addresses) next, which worked without problems.
