RainebowSerpent Posted October 25, 2006 at 10:41 AM Report Posted October 25, 2006 at 10:41 AM I need help from someone chinese or with a very good knowledge of chinese naming practices. I am expecting a baby in January and have been told it is a girl and want to give her an authentic sounding chinese name. I was adopted from china when i was quite small, and still use my chinese name which my parents did not change. I don't know much about chinese but i know the kinds of sounds i like, so i'm willing to be flexible with those. Mostly i want a name that uses characters with pleaseing meanings even if they don't create an overall meaning, but not ones emphasis 'feminine graces' like beauty because i do not value those things, i think they stereotype women. I like natural things, spiritual things, and virtues. But as i say, i don't want to reveal my western up bringing by choosing a name that no chinese person would recognise as a name. I don't care if it doesn't sound like a western name, so long as they wouldn't find it unpronouncable (i have an understanding of tones, so please tell me what tone the characters are spoken in.) I like sounds which use consonants s/z/sh/m/k/y, and use vowel sounds like ee/oo like tee and noo, and I like Ai (eye) Mai/Lai/Tai, and Lan/Le, and i like AH, I like Li Yue or Xia Yin or Ai Ling Thank you! Yang Rui Posted October 26, 2006 at 04:24 PM Report Posted October 26, 2006 at 04:24 PM Isn't this very similar to another thread you started here ? Also, i think people will need to know the baby's surname (including tone) if they are going to come up with something that sounds nice. If you like the word Lan, you could consider 岚 (second tone), rather than the more usual 兰 meaning orchid. To me, 岚 conjours up images of Chinese mountain scenery with mists rolling between the peaks. Very natural, very chinese. I'm not a native speaker though, so i think you should await approval from an expert... Quote
vivian11 Posted October 27, 2006 at 04:06 AM Report Posted October 27, 2006 at 04:06 AM I think Yang Rui is right. In China, the surname is needed when you are finding a name for your baby.Altough I am a Chinese,I am not good at selecting names. But I can give you some advice. My Chinese teacher who knows Chinese culture very well said that the tones of Chinese names are mostly the first ,second or third tone, especially in girl's name. I agree with Yang Rui,岚is a wonderful name in China. If you like AI ,how about 蔼 AI (third tone),which means amiable. Above is all my sugguestion.I hope it can help you:) Quote
anonymoose Posted November 9, 2006 at 10:18 PM Report Posted November 9, 2006 at 10:18 PM I'm not Chinese, so I probably don't know much about this topic, but have you thought about choosing a name that sounds the same in both Chinese and English? For example, how about Li An, which is almost the same as Leanne in English? I'm not sure what characters would suit to make this an authentic sounding name, though I would guess something like 丽安. Li4 means beautiful, An1 means peace. If you don't want connotations of beauty, etc, I'm sure there are other suitable characters. Anyway, this was just a thought. Quote
