goldie Posted October 25, 2006 at 03:43 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2006 at 03:43 PM i'm not very technical and so far, the only method of inputting hanzi into a word doc for me has been to use MDBG, but i find it quite annoying sometimes, especially as it doesn't always have the zi that i want. so, i downloaded the IME for chinese simplified and traditional and thought i should be able to use it, but i can't figure out how. i open word and select chinese prc or whatever and nothing happens when i type pinyin? goldie Posted October 25, 2006 at 03:58 PM Author Report Share Posted October 25, 2006 at 03:58 PM thanks. that does help and i can toggle between the language options now, but for some reason, my chinese option is linked to the microphone and not to the keyboard. so when i type pinyin, it just stays as pinyin... another thing, when i am in word and try to use the language option, word just decides that it has to close for no reason, EVERY single time. this wasn't happening when i didn't[ have the language options. kudra Posted October 25, 2006 at 05:27 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2006 at 05:27 PM my chinese option is linked to the microphone and not to the keyboard sounds like something in the control panels. Might look around in Settings/Control Panel/Regional and Languages Options Languages Tab click Details look under Chinese (PRC) or whatever you have. See if there is a microphone and if so, can you turn it off, or possibly add the keyboard. just a guess Don't know about the fact that Word always shuts down. Maybe it thinks your keyboard input after you select Chinese is microphone input and freaks out.
djwebb2004 Posted October 25, 2006 at 05:43 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2006 at 05:43 PM I have installed the IME that lets you input Traditional Characters by pinyin, but the input box is tiny (My screen is 1600*1200 resolution), and I could only use it with a magnifying glass. Has anyone found anyway to resize the IME input box itself? I need to see the various character options better...
goldie Posted October 26, 2006 at 10:19 AM Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 at 10:19 AM i'm having no luck using the IME for either of the Chinese options. when i type pinyin, it doesn't provide any link to hanzi options. when i try to select the language as Chinese using the alt-shift button, it immediately says 'word has encountered a problem and has to close'. i'm just going to stick with MDBG. HashiriKata Posted October 26, 2006 at 11:23 AM Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 at 11:23 AM Hang on, goldie! Which OS is your machine using? Win 2000? Win XP? (I recently enabled Chinese for a Win 2000 machine and it gave me a bit of an initial problem because the procedure was slightly different (from Win XP, which I'm used to))
flameproof Posted October 26, 2006 at 01:27 PM Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 at 01:27 PM goldie, did you install an input method? I think you have to install also pinyin input method. You can get here: http://qq.bur.st/chinesecomputing.php bottom of page....
goldie Posted October 26, 2006 at 07:22 PM Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 at 07:22 PM HashiriKata (is that running style?) my nihongo is not great anyways, it's XP that i use, but flameproof- THANKS your're a gem, i've finally solved my problem, your pinyin input thing did the trick
HashiriKata Posted October 26, 2006 at 08:58 PM Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 at 08:58 PM I'm pleased to see that you've solved your inputting problem. You're right, HK is "running style". It sounds actually more stylish than my blunt version: "how to run" 日本語を忘れないように頑張ってね!

HashiriKata Posted October 28, 2006 at 11:38 AM Report Share Posted October 28, 2006 at 11:38 AM I think you may already know this, goldie: Turkish grammar is quite similar to Japanese, and I hope you'll make great progress in it. Yes, I speak some others but I think quality, and not quantity, counts
goldie Posted October 28, 2006 at 04:07 PM Author Report Share Posted October 28, 2006 at 04:07 PM @HK, you're right. it's quality not quantity. 只是問一問而已. as for Turkish...without the 漢字, i can't learn a language it seems
