Does anyone know the possible dangers here in China with asbestos?

I don't know about everywhere else but in Shanghai they are refurbishing buildings, tearing down buildings, and otherwise doing heavy contruction at a feverish pace. I swear every house hold has a compressor and a jack hammer.

So with all that rebuilding going on I'm wondering about the dangers of asbestos.

Also, how would you write asbestos in Chinese.

Thanks,

Asbestos = 石棉 (shímián)

I don't have the slightest idea about asbestos usage in Chinese buildings, but given how little China seems to care about all the other toxic chemicals in the environment, I'd assume there is lots of asbestos floating around from all the construction...

Wasn't Asbestos mainly used in insulation? If so (I'm not totally sure) southern China should br fairly safe. I've only come across one properly insulated room (not even a whole building).

asbestos is everywhere, but it is more dangerous where there is demolition, such as shanghai.

if you are sensitive to this particle, carry a face mask. i look like darth vader when i do energy audits in some steel mills... because treating lung cancer in china is tough....
