markalexander100 Posted March 13, 2004 at 01:04 AM Report Posted March 13, 2004 at 01:04 AM Do you want etymologies of words or characters? If characters, for research or to help you learn them? If the latter, http://www.zhongwen.com/m/hello.htm gets good reviews. Quote
Guest alfredo Posted March 14, 2004 at 03:53 PM Report Posted March 14, 2004 at 03:53 PM Thanks! I'm placing an order now. Is there anything like this for whole words aswell? Or has this dictionary that aswell? Quote
Guest alfredo Posted April 4, 2004 at 12:00 PM Report Posted April 4, 2004 at 12:00 PM I have it now, and it's great! Just one problem... I've browsed through it. I've tried to find one character, and I couldn't because the character I tried to find was a 'simplified' one and all the characters in the book, I think, are 'traditional' that's sort of a problem, don't you think? Especially when you're reading a book written in simplified Chinese. Quote
roddy Posted April 4, 2004 at 12:12 PM Report Posted April 4, 2004 at 12:12 PM I just had a look through my copy and right enough, you don't seem to be able to look up simplified characters. Of course, if you look the simplified character up in another dictionary it'll probably show you the traditional character and then you . . . Roddy Quote
Guest alfredo Posted April 4, 2004 at 02:37 PM Report Posted April 4, 2004 at 02:37 PM Well yes, I could try and find the characters in that way... But are there any other genealogical/etymological dictionaries that don't have this problem? And are about as good? Quote
