Which one to say "to receive"

Recommended Posts

接受 jie1 shou4

接收 jie1 shou1

接到 jie1 dao4

收到 shou1 dao4

受到 shou4 dao4

Could someone be kind to explain to me the differences between the above compounds?

If you can think of some contextual examples, I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

Which one do I say for

- I received a present

- I received a letter

Can you explain why 接收 is used with 信号, and not the others?

So 接受 has doesn't mean "to receive" but "to accept", eg. I can't accept you going XXXXX.

How about the other ones?

Thanks.

I think 收到 is more commonly used for both examples..

接受/接收, 接到/收到 are two pairs of words with very close meanings. This is how I use them.

我收到邀请并接受邀请。 (I receive an invitation and accept it)

他接收暗号。(He receives the secrect signal)_

他接受暗号。 (He receives and understands the secrect signal)

小王在机场接到( not 收到)老张。(Wong picked up Zhang at the airport)

小王收到(or 接到)包裹。(Wong received the package)

小王受到不公平的对待。(Wong had an unfair experience)

受 has meanings of suffering, bearing, receiveing, accepting

收 means receive, bring in, gather together, control(ex:一发不可收. 收不住心), harvest.

Hope these help.

In summary, here is my conclusion with correct romanisation:

接收 zip3 sau1 = to receive (only for telecommunication signals)

接受 zip3 sau6 = to accept

收到 sau1 dou2 = to receive something

受到 sau6 dou3 = to be affected by, to suffer

接 zip3 = to pick someone up from somewhere

接到 zip3 dou2 = (Used in Mandarin only)

接 can also mean "to catch" or "to pick up" as in picking up the telephone.

接到 is used in Cantonese and can mean "caught" as in having caught a ball or "received" as in having received a phone call. eg 我今朝接到佢電話.

No. It can also be used for the information. Ex: 他接收到這樣一個訊息: 公司要裁員了. Apart from that, 接收 can also mean to 'take over', in this case, it can be replaced by 接管 (take over).

In work, if you get a job opportunity, you can say 我接到了一個case./我接了一個case.

受到 sau6 dou3 = to be affected by, to suffer

受到 is used in the sense of passive pattern. Ex: 他受到歧視. 他受到威脅, etc.

Hope it helps!:)
