KIWIBOY Posted December 3, 2006 at 08:19 AM Report Posted December 3, 2006 at 08:19 AM How prevalent are arranged marriages in China ? Quote
Xiao Kui Posted December 4, 2006 at 08:07 AM Report Posted December 4, 2006 at 08:07 AM i don't know how prevalent, percentage-wise or anything, but it definitely still happens, especially in the countryside. Abt 7 yrs ago I was friends with a Chinese couple from Henan. They had been recently married in a union arranged by their parents and they hated each others guts, and were pretty bitter at their parents for putting them together. Quote
imron Posted December 4, 2006 at 11:55 PM Report Posted December 4, 2006 at 11:55 PM Also, I think it's quite common for parents to introduce potentional husbands/wifes to their daughters/sons. Although not strictly an arranged marriage because in theory the son/daughter can refuse if they don't like the other person, if the son/daughter is over 25-30, there will be a lot of pressure on them to just to accept the person the parents have introduced to them - especially if the son/daughter has already refused several other introductions. heifeng Posted December 5, 2006 at 03:51 AM Report Posted December 5, 2006 at 03:51 AM Yeah, it seems more to be the multiple "pressure tactics" marriage (esp. countryside). Do it more willingly now or suffer more later...or it will effect your younger siblings if you don't do it NOW because they have to wait for you to get married first!! etc...etc...people also seem to have false dob's that make them older so that they can get married /get their plot of land earlier....Since many people have to rely on their families so much anyway, no matter if they are at home or leave for work in the cities, it's hard to go against their wishes...
