venture160 Posted December 12, 2006 at 02:54 PM Report Posted December 12, 2006 at 02:54 PM Maybe I am biased but I think 东北 or the "North-East" of China is the best place to study Chinese, maybe its the accent or the long winter nights that force you to stay in and study, either way, here are a list of schools up north that have Chinese programs, feel free to add more. 东北 includes 黑龙江,吉林以及辽宁。 Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning HeiLongJiang 黑龙江省 Haerbin 哈尔滨 哈尔滨工业大学 Harbin Institute of Technology http://studyathit.hit.edu.cn/hypx.asp Usually about 300 students a semester, also home to the American CET Harbin program (5-30 students a semester) Probably the best program in the city. Good facilities, large Russian and Korean population. 哈尔滨理工大学 Harbin University of Science and Technology http://www1.hrbust.edu.cn/zuzhijigou/hustfao/fao/lhlx.html G - Steven Posted December 14, 2006 at 08:26 PM Report Posted December 14, 2006 at 08:26 PM Have you heard of the ARAQ network? it provides support for foreigners who go to Dongbei. THis is the link: http://www.hyccchina.org/english/araq/ tell me what you think of this Quote
stephanhodges Posted December 18, 2006 at 04:47 AM Report Posted December 18, 2006 at 04:47 AM I also took a weekend trip up from Jilin University (which is also northeast, and a very very nice place), to Jiamusi. The school there has (if I recall) about 200 foreigners, mostly russian or korean. They also have another 150 indian and pakistani studying medicine, but in english. I will be travelling up to qiqihar in about 2 two weeks to look over the university, so it's serendipidous that you posted it now. Quote
stephanhodges Posted December 18, 2006 at 04:50 AM Report Posted December 18, 2006 at 04:50 AM Hmmm. I think the link for Qiqihar is incorrect. It says (on the Engish version), that it's for Haerbin. Quote
venture160 Posted December 18, 2006 at 05:03 AM Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 at 05:03 AM Thanks, its fixed, if you have some field reports from these Universities feel free to post them! also, how is Jiamusi? as a city that is Quote
stephanhodges Posted December 18, 2006 at 10:03 AM Report Posted December 18, 2006 at 10:03 AM I only spent one day in Jiamusi, with a friend who lives there. They have a very large active Budhist temple grounds, with many buildings. It's very beautiful. When we were there, they were just building their ice city on the river. smaller than Haerbin, but it was interesting. I enjoyed the underground shopping, of course, considering the temperatures. University is quite large, with new swimming facilities, several campuses. I only saw a small part of the campus, because we were touring around a bit. I don't pay attention to night life types of activities so I don't know what they would be like. Someone else told me "there's not much to do in Jiamusi", but I can't vouch for that. It's fairly large by USA standards, but not by Chinese standards, of course. Quote
venture160 Posted December 18, 2006 at 03:06 PM Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 at 03:06 PM I think if you wanted to really study chinese and chinese culture(how well does dongbei represent chinese culture?), Jiamusi would be a great place. You would be so isolated that there would be nothing to do but throw yourself into the Chinese society. this of course can be done in larger cities but its much harder. Also, its great to study in a city where you can understand what people say on the street. (forget anything south of Beijing) Quote
