chichi Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:31 AM Report Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:31 AM Enough said about Zhang Yimou. Let me give you a brief tour of the currently popluar TV series "Dicey Business". The following is link to a part of Episode 1 with Chinese subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owNCia2u_XQ The main role Kiu Ching-Chou is a man of contradiction. He cherishes friendship and his lover. But when it comes to his fame, he can give up everything for it. Although he has been struggling, he just can't overcome his vainity. This is a very intriguing character. And the main female actress did a very good job acting as an addict gambler. You can find information abou this series on line. Quote
skylee Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:52 AM Report Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:52 AM hmmmm .... a thread on the same subject at the Chinese Corner -> http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/144-fixing-cultural-misunderstandings14 It has a good start. Good acting and good actors. But the ending looks somewhat disappointing (I've bought the DVD in Shanghai but am not really interested in watching it, plus the disc-version is in Mandarin which is a major letdown). Quote
chichi Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:57 AM Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 at 02:57 AM Mando version sucks. Quote

skylee Posted January 4, 2007 at 11:30 PM Report Posted January 4, 2007 at 11:30 PM no I don't want to see the mandarin version (i.e. the dvd I've bought). the last episode will be broadcast tonight anyway. and info on how the story ends can be found easily on the web - that beautiful flowery dress and those beautiful legs ... i agree that the script is flawed. but Mr Miu is too charming to give up. dalaowai Posted January 5, 2007 at 12:23 AM Report Posted January 5, 2007 at 12:23 AM Video overdubbing of any language should be illegal. I don't understand a word of Cantonese, however it kills me to watch a Hong Kong movie/tv show in Mandarin. For example, Stephen Chow has a unique voice and having someone else try imitating him speaking Mandarin is painful. Quote
Quest Posted January 5, 2007 at 01:02 AM Report Posted January 5, 2007 at 01:02 AM Interesting.. how can 荣 not die? Quote
skylee Posted January 5, 2007 at 04:11 AM Report Posted January 5, 2007 at 04:11 AM Why, he died in Episode 34. Quote

BTW, this is in today's newspaper, and it looks like all those mainland audience saw version 1 of the ending -> 宣萱爆《賭場風雲》 兩個版本結局 宣萱笑說:「兩個結局都無揀三哥的,其中一個是歐陽震華抱着一個BB出來,沒有交代他是否已婚,給觀眾一個幻想空間,第二個版本就要保留,讓觀眾到時去睇,不過現在也不知播那一個版本。」 Quote

Quest Posted January 6, 2007 at 02:48 AM Report Posted January 6, 2007 at 02:48 AM
chichi Posted January 6, 2007 at 03:22 PM Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 at 03:22 PM I think this series is better than most of other TVB series. It depicts a conflicting character so well. And Michael Miu did a great job in this series. Quote

skylee Posted January 9, 2007 at 01:30 PM Report Posted January 9, 2007 at 01:30 PM Discussing this series, someone posted this poem in a forum which I think is good -> 《猶豫》 密茨凱維奇(波蘭) 孫用譯 (English version follows) 未見你時,我不悲傷,更不歎息, 見到你時,也不失掉我的理智, 但在長久的日月裏不再見你, 我的心靈就像有什麼喪失, 我在懷念的心緒中自問: 這是友誼呢,還是愛情? Uncertainty by Adam Mickiewicz (translator not known) While I don't see you, I don't shed a tear I never lose my senses when you're near, But, with our meetings few and far between There's something missing, waiting to be seen. Is there a name for what I'm thinking of? Are we just friends? Or should I call this love? As soon as we have said our last good-byes, Your image never floats before my eyes; But more than once, when you have been long gone, I seemed to feel your presence linger on. I wonder then what I've been thinking of. Are we just friends? Or should I call this love? When I'm downcast, I never seek relief By pouring out my heart in tales of grief; Yet, as I wander aimlessly, once more I somehow end up knocking at your door; What brought me here? What am I thinking of? Are we just friends? Or should I call this love? I'd give my life to keep you sound and well, To make you smile, I would descend to hell; But though I'd climb the mountains, swim the seas I do not look to be your health and peace: Again I ask, what am I thinking of? Are we just friends? or should I call this love? And when you place your hand upon my palm, I am enveloped in a blissful calm, Prefiguring some final, gentle rest; But still my heart beats loudly in my breast As if to ask: what are you thinking of? Are you two friends? or will you call this love? Not bardic spirit seized my mortal tongue When I thought of you and composed this song; But still, I can't help wondering sometimes: Where did these notions come from, and these rhymes? In heaven's name, what I was dreaming of? And what had inspired me? Friendship or love? Quote
Young Sing Posted January 21, 2007 at 06:10 PM Report Posted January 21, 2007 at 06:10 PM just finished watching the 35 episodes a couple of days back. I find that the gambling screens too little. Not very impressive. I guess TVB shall squeeze it to 20 episodes. they probably made it 35 because too many big names and 2 locations shooting. Quote
