Came across this word in a blog, can't quite get its meaning. After some googling, I get the impression that it refers to something illegal, but that doesn't seem to fit with the original meaning. Does it refer to something legal but unwanted?

PS: I'm no pingpong expert. Are edge balls legal at all?

I'd come across it before and assumed from context it was something borderline legal - in a gray area, or something not yet legislated for - but that you would expect to be illegal if anyone got around to making up rules about it.

So basically, that's what I think it means, let's hope I'm right . . .

Edge balls are very hard to make, harder to return, and legal in most versions of Ping Pong I've played. Its difficulty to return makes its victims resentful, though, so it's legality can be questioned. I'd go with Roddy that it would be a borderline legal action.
