We don't use it [化装间'] in Modern Chinese these days but it's still commonly used in Japan.
Are you sure? I don't think it ever exists in Japan.

化妝室 is used in Korea (well I remember very clearly that this was what I looked for everytime I got into a dept store in Korea) but it is usually written in hanguel.

現在では、単に「トイレ」といわれることが多い。

I don't know about 化妆间... but I'm quite sure I've seen 化妆室 before on signs here in Taiwan. @@; Though it does seem to be something you just see on signs, and not something people actually say much.

On that note, it's funny how many different words there seem to be for "bathroom", isn't it? (In both Chinese and English).

在现在的日本,厕所一词的说法通常有四种:“便所(bensyo)”、“トイレ(toire)”、“お手洗い(otearai)”、“化妆室(kesyousitsu)”,按照文雅程度“便所(bensyo)”最低,可翻译为中文的“茅厕”一般是在指公园等场合的公共厕所、也有人指没有附带卫生纸的厕所,“化妆室(kesyousitu)”是四种中最文雅的说法即是“化妆室”多指比较高档的厕所或是在特殊场合下使用,比如用餐时(在日本很多公共场合有专门的化妆室,只有镜子、水槽和垃圾箱等,里面没有入厕用具。也叫做“化妆室”一般是在比如同一层楼中只有单一性别的厕所的情况下出现。),而“トイレ(toire)”、“お手洗い(otearai)”则是比较普通的说法。

古代中国

中国古代厕所多设于房舍外,采“溷厕合一”形式与猪舍相连。通常粪坑颇挖并覆茅草,亦称“茅坑”或“茅厕”。
