An update on this topic

I went to the bank today and found you don't need the currency exhange receipt to change money. For westerners there is a $500 USD daily limit to convert RMB to another currency. For Chinese Mainlanders there is no limit. This is if you convert to any major currency Euro, Japanese yen etc.. On asking on what I should do if I had more that the teller said I should just come several days in a row to do this.

So my chinese wife did the conversion. She needed her ID card.

If you want a rarer currency, (i.e. we wanted swiss francs) you may need to wait a day while they get that kind of bank note sent to the bank to change it for you. If you've putting it on your card you don't need to worry about this.

So get paid in RMB it is easy to change the money now.

Have fun,

Simon:)

P.S. there are still money traders at the entrance of the big banks which can give you a slightly better rate usually on foreign money to chinese money.

Just a quick question on the Western Union. Has anyone done this recently? How much are the fees? How much can you send at one time? The website isn't exactly loaded with info
