Is this offensive?

Hi,

I watched the movie Chinatown(1974) today. Towards the end of the film, as Jake enters the house and brushes past the James Hong chinese character, he says four words to him in Cantonese and Hong is taken aback, apparently insulted.

The words are "Chow hoi tai dai".

May I know what's the meaning of this phrase? Is it offensive to Cantonese people?

Thank you!

Are you sure it's not "chow hAi tai dai"?

If so, it means "your smelly c*nt is too big"

It's quite weird though... :mrgreen:

OK. According to this blog, what Nicholson said was 「走開契弟!」.

Depending on the tone, "走開 (chow hoi)" can be simply "go away" or "bugger off". "契弟 (kai dai)" is ususally offensive when used in a fight.

Meanings of "契弟 (kai dai)" -> 1 / 2 / 3

老積追訪女主角,在門前被華裔管家所拒,老積怒目說出一句:「Chau Hoi Kai Di!」

回碟聽了數次,原來他在說:「走開契弟!」。 單是這四字,買碟的廿圓都值了。

Ha ha... Apparently, my Cantonese is getting a bit rusty! :oops:

I find it easier to speak Cantonese than romanising it...

haha...契弟 is cantonese means something like son of bitch, it's used mostly in 60s-80s, now has many news kinds of "words" instead of 契弟 that make speak 契弟 being too "polite".

Yeh, I agree. There's many 'new generation' swearwords, some which may not have been offensive back then.
