kunming rail connections

Recommended Posts

On gokunming it says:

"Within five years it will have road and rail connections to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in addition to rail links to Hanoi, Vientiane, Phnom Penh. After the Stilwell Road is renovated, Kunming will be the only Chinese city connected to India by road."

Does anyone know anything about the plans for rail connections to SEAsia from Kunming? I understand the Kunming-Hanoi line has been down for a few years (see final post in this (french) thread. So from what I can gather, it seems the plans (also mentioned in this 2004 report) just aren't happening...

Anyone got any more up to date info?

Kunming - Nanning

Change to Nanning - Hanoi.

No Problem.

(Although, you could probably fly in the time it takes to buy the train ticket!)

ta - i guess you can go via guizhou as well

but i was curious about the direct route that's supposedly being built - the existing railway in vietnam goes round the coast. bit of a detour - see map in this thread

Er, yes, there is no real movement on this. Certainly not on the railway to Bangkok - don't hold your breath for this in 10 years. The latest 5 year plan includes such things as a railway to Ruili on the border of Burma, but Yunnan is a very marginal province in China. It totally lacks clout, and so if you get gaosu gonglu to all counties over the next few years, you'll be doing well.

Ah well - sounds like Air Asia's going to save the day anyway... (it'll probably start flying bangkok-kunming later this year...)
