儿 behind different words, why ?

Hi everyone, can someone explain me whats the purpose in putting 儿 behind different kind of words like subjects (饭馆儿) or 外边儿 ?

On the whole, it's best to regard this kind of 儿 as a mark of Northern dialects (the Beijing dialect in particular) without any significant meaning or function (There are some exceptions but don't let this bother you). Due to Beijing's influence, the 儿 suffix has also become standard in a fair number of words.

From a previous post many many moons ago.

2) -儿 coming at the end of things. Apparently this happens A) to show a warm, positive attitude to something, that you like something ( 小孩儿, 好玩儿, 慢慢儿走). B) when something is small - 小鸟儿, 一会儿) and C) to distinguish between nouns and verbs with the same pronunciation / character - (干活儿) and D) to distinguish meaning - 一块儿 means together, 一块 means one piece. There's also a paragraph explaining when the 'r' sound chokes off the end of the previous syllable and when it doesn't - I'll skip that for now.

Thank you very much ! Could you give me the link for the whole article or is this all there is to the 儿 ?

That was paraphrased from a book, so there isn't really an article I can link you to. Basically I'd just rely on whatever your sources - textbooks / teachers / dictionaries tell you, and if they ever contradict each other opt for the one you think is easier to pronounce.

Yeah travelling around China you really get a jarring sense of different Mandarin dialects... from the trailing "er" to the different frequency and strength of "a" to close a sentence.
