2007 Summer Programs in Beijing

For those of you that are interested, 1on1 Mandarin – The Language Center will have their Second Annual 2007 Summer Mandarin programs in Beijing from July 23-August 31. The two programs offered are Immersion NOW! and Summer in Beijing.

Known for specializing in teaching Mandarin to Westerners, 1on1 Mandarin has now integrated their effective small class size model into a convenient 6 week Summer module for students of all levels. 1on1 Mandarin has adopted a 1on1 and 1on3 class size structure so that the student would have as much opportunity to participate in class as possible. In addition, all teachers at 1on1 Mandarin are trained exclusively by 1on1 Mandarin on how to properly use the 1on1 methodology (which places a strong emphasis practical speaking, pronunciation and tones), how to work with western learning styles, how to deal with western students, and most important, how to create a learning environment that will stimulate active participation.

1on1 Mandarin is experienced in teaching Chinese Made Easier (CME) series by Martin Symonds and will also use this series for all beginner classes. Martin Symonds, a veteran Mandarin student himself, understood the difficulties of learning Mandarin and wanted to create text that would mitigate the difficulties that he as a student encountered while studying Mandarin. Some of the key features that he integrated that make CME popular amongst Westerners is the unique intermixing of both Chinese characters and pinyin into the text and the eventual phasing out pinyin in higher levels. This function creates a less intimidating environment for learning and also allows for increased efficiency in the practical speaking skills necessary for living in China.

Immersion NOW! is an intense six week immersion program designed for serious students that want to jump-start their Mandarin for future goals in China. Immersion now integrates the unique 1on1 methodology with advantages of the lecture-type, small group sessions. Each day is filled with an intense six hours of class instruction and can maximize your complete Mandarin skill set by focusing on your individual strengths and weaknesses.

All classes will be taught by 1on1 Mandarin teachers. Onsite teachers will also be available in the dorms to help you with your studies outside of class.

Daily Schedule

Lecture (6-8 Students) – 2 Hours

Group Session (2-3 Students) – 1 Hour

1on1 Session – 1 Hour

Specialized Tutoring – 2 Hours

Weekend Sightseeing

Tuition: RMB 22,079

Tuition cost includes books, classes, social activities and weekend sightseeing. Housing not included approximately RMB 4,000.

Summer in Beijing offers an excellent opportunity for people interested in gaining basic Mandarin skills while immersing themselves in the rich culture available in Beijing. In addition to Mandarin classes, students can participate in daily afternoon activities that include an hour of 1on1 tutoring with Chinese students, HSK instruction and pronunciation courses. Some of the cultural electives students may choose from include calligraphy, Chinese Kung Fu, Taichi and other traditional activities.

1on1 Mandarin will teach the smaller classes, while larger classes will be administered by 1on1 Mandarin’s local university partner. Texts may vary due to different teaching styles.

For both Immersion NOW! and Summer in Beijing, all Summer students will live on a Chinese university campus and have numerous opportunities to use their Mandarin in their everyday interaction with locals.

Last summer, my wife and I went through 1on1Mandarin's Immersion NOW! program. This was such a great way for us to start our Mandarin study! We loved the intensity of six hours in class every day plus several more hours of study. Having five teachers allowed us to learn from each teacher's strengths. The program is expensive, but we learned a semester's worth of Chinese in less than two months. Our summer was more focused as a time of intensive study than a full immersion experience, but we heard from 1on1Mandarin that this is something they want to improve for future years. We really enjoyed the looks we got from people when they realized the Chinese we were using we learned in just 6 weeks!
