Andy-Ru Posted February 12, 2007 at 12:49 PM Report Posted February 12, 2007 at 12:49 PM I have a few questions. Firstly: Does anyone know the word for the colour "brown"? I've looked in the dictionary, and it comes up as both "棕色" and "褐色", which is the correct one? Secondly: What's the difference between 灰色 and 灰白色? Thirdly: Are there seperate words for "rat" and "mouse" or are they both 老鼠? Thanks Quote
Koneko Posted February 12, 2007 at 03:15 PM Report Posted February 12, 2007 at 03:15 PM Re 1:- Both 棕色 and 褐色 are correct. But I would say that the latter is more commonly used in daily conversations. There's also another common term 巧克力色 (lit. chocolate colour) Re 2:- 灰色 = grey colour 灰白色 = greyish white; off-white Re 3:- No seperate words for "rat" or "mouse"; both known as 老鼠 in Mandarin. It's also commonly known as 耗子 in Northern China. K. Quote
Gulao Posted February 12, 2007 at 10:19 PM Report Posted February 12, 2007 at 10:19 PM The three listed are good for brown. I've also seen 咖啡色. Quote
Vitas Posted February 22, 2007 at 03:43 AM Report Posted February 22, 2007 at 03:43 AM All of the above are correct translations for brown in Chinese, while in Cantonese 啡色 is more comonly used I think both "棕色" and "褐色 are seen more often in written Chinese. 咖啡色 is usually used on labels on products Quote
