SeekerOfPeace Posted February 15, 2007 at 03:12 PM Author Report Share Posted February 15, 2007 at 03:12 PM They really do help. I'm kind of curious. Why is using 要 considered impolite? I've learned a lot from reading your corrections, thanks so much. You may not be a teacher but your explanations are quite good considering English isn't your first language. young man Posted February 16, 2007 at 02:59 PM Report Share Posted February 16, 2007 at 02:59 PM SeekerOfPeace: It's OK to use 要,but I just feel someting is not right with that, maybe impolite, maybe something else,I don't know.If I write the message,I'll use 打算. One mistake is my instruction,I said 你的学生 should be after 你 but I still write 你的学生和你.I should have written "你和你的学生“ instead.
HashiriKata Posted February 17, 2007 at 11:38 AM Report Share Posted February 17, 2007 at 11:38 AM It's OK to use 要,but I just feel someting is not right with that, maybe impolite, maybe something else,I don't know. 要 here would sound too definite, too imposing, especially when others are also involved. 打算 here simply means "I'm thinking of doing", it's therefore more tentative, more polite. By the way, it's not "你和你的学生" but "你和我的学生"
SeekerOfPeace Posted February 17, 2007 at 01:35 PM Author Report Share Posted February 17, 2007 at 01:35 PM I see how that could be perceived as impolite. What I would actually rather say is: ''I would like to go hikig with you and my students...'' I consider that would be polite enough. and yeah, it's my students! You know this is very helping. I've got this bookmarked and when I want to write e-mails I double check here to make sure I haven't made any mistakes.
