Commercial Chinese language program vs. Applying directly

Hi,

I'm thinking of going to China to learn Chinese in September. I'm interested in maximizing my language ability - so learning environment is very important for me. Have been thinking of some programs, and wondering if anyone could give me any advice on any of them? Specifically, I've been looking into the CET at Harbin Program ($$$$!! - but small classes and customizable tutorials) or direct enrollment into a Chinese University in Beijing. I'm trying to stay away from BLCU because I don't like the large class sizes. Does anyone have any opinion about what they think would be a better choice? I've also considered IUP and ICLP, but those are also expensive. I'm just wondering if the "payoff" from these commercial programs are worth the money. Thanks!
