adding tone marks to latin text

Hi there

I want to create pinyin text in Word by adding tone marks to text I have inputed in the latin alphabet.

I don't want to include characters, so the explanation in the "characters to pinyin" thread (using the ASIAN LAYOUT tools in the FORMAT menu) isn't quite right for me.

What's the most straightforward way to do what I'm trying to do?

I have downloaded the IME and am using Word 2003 on Windows XP (English edition)

Any tips appreciated - thank you very much :)

Try this link: http://www.csulb.edu/~txie/PINYIN/pinyin.htm. It suggests two methods, first using a tool called NJ communicator which I know nothing about, and second using a couple Word macros which is the method I used. It works great! You type in pinyin using tone numbers. Then you run the macro and it converts the pinyin with numbers to pinyin with tone marks. On my computer I even created a button for the toolbar that runs the macro so I don't have to go to the macro menu every time.

If you're interested, here's the link to the web page of the CSULB professor who wrote the tool.

Good Luck!

Even better, you could try using Pinyinput. An IME purposely designed to input Hanyu Pinyin with tone marks. The benefit over Word Macros is that it will work with any Windows program, and you can switch it on/off, as simply as you would any other IME.

Thanks for the tool Imron! nice.

does anyone know how to put the tone marks on syllables like: "hng" or "ng" ?

I mean not over which letter to place them but how to type them at all.

I found them in my dictionaries although the tone markers look slightly different than the usual ones which makes me suggest that there were unusual methods used in these special cases.

Thanks!

Use pinyinput and change the mode to unchecked (click on the button on the pinyinput toolbar that looks like a check-mark). Then you can place tone marks over individual syllables like this: hǹg. Whether or not it looks correct however is highly dependant on how well the program you're using handles unicode diacritical marks.
