griz326 Posted February 20, 2007 at 08:19 PM Report Posted February 20, 2007 at 08:19 PM After a break in my practice, I re-learned lessons 1-5 without difficulty. For some reason, I cannot master lesson-6. Unfortunately, I cannot give you many clues as to what I'm not getting because my frustration level is so high. I've easily listened to lesson-6 50 times. A part of me believes that if I had the pinyin of the script to follow along, I might get past the learning blind spots... I tried moving on to lesson-7...but the first thing they do is review lesson-6 which I have not mastered. Any suggestions as to what to do? TIA, Griz Quote
lokki Posted February 20, 2007 at 09:20 PM Report Posted February 20, 2007 at 09:20 PM Transcripts are to be found on the net. There is one for the first 30 lessons that is especially complete. IIRC it was called "pimsleur mandarin companion" or something very close to that. Try hunting around for it. But if you are really stuck after that many times through a lesson the best you can do is to move on anyway. Work through the next 3-5 units and THEN come back and try again. Quote
griz326 Posted February 20, 2007 at 11:35 PM Author Report Posted February 20, 2007 at 11:35 PM I guess you are correct, lokki, I should just move forward. I am so rigid in my learning method that I could not even listen to lesson 7 because I was so bothered by not having mastered lesson 6. I'll put my head down and try to move forward. I'll report back in a couple of weeks. Quote

leosmith Posted February 21, 2007 at 03:52 PM Report Posted February 21, 2007 at 03:52 PM Any suggestions as to what to do? I have trouble with Pimsleur because for some reason I have a very visual memory when it comes to vocabulary. I may hear a word a dozen times, and still not remember it. If I see it written down, and study it, I can usually remember it. What I do to remedy this is concurrently study a list of vocabulary and phrases in pinyin for each lesson. I got 2 lists from various sources on the web. PM me if you want them. First day. Before I hear a lesson for the first time, I study the vocabulary (it's usually only a few words). During the 1st listening, I write down any phrases that I find difficult, and I make sure to get at least one sentence for each new vocabulary word. Second day. I study the list 2 times, seperated by at least a few hours, before the 2nd listening. Third day. I study the list 2 times, seperated by at least a few hours, before the 3nd listening. Without fail, after the 3rd listening I'm ready to move on. (note - I review back 2 lessons, so my list is always 3 lessons worth of material. After finishing a level, I load the whole list into supermemo for long term memory management.) Quote
flameproof Posted February 23, 2007 at 01:40 PM Report Posted February 23, 2007 at 01:40 PM I suggest not bother about getting stuck and go on with #7. I listen most of the 90 lessons just once, with a high "forget" rate. I did wrote down the words and meanings in Pinyin, usually sometimes later it falls into places. I think a 100% retention rate is illusion, don't aim for that. Here are the words I wrote down from #6: yě 也 also, too qù 去 to go wǒ nár 我那儿 my place shénme shí hòu 什么时候 when? xiàn zài 现在 now guò huì r 过一会儿 later (I know, I missed the "yi"...) Quote
leosmith Posted February 23, 2007 at 03:01 PM Report Posted February 23, 2007 at 03:01 PM Hi flameproof, please forgive the nitpicks. wǒ nár wo3 nar4 guò huì r 过一会儿 later (I know, I missed the "yi"...) ..and you didn't fix it because...? Quote
griz326 Posted February 23, 2007 at 03:06 PM Author Report Posted February 23, 2007 at 03:06 PM Thank you all for your help. Thanks to Leo and Flameproof I now have the pinyin for Lesson 6. Armed with that, I plan to move on to Lesson 7 after one last Lesson 6 review. I wonder why Pimsleur does not make their scripts available for those of us who need to see the words? Quote
Tyr Posted February 23, 2007 at 07:38 PM Report Posted February 23, 2007 at 07:38 PM Here is the best Pimsleur resource you're going to find. I just happened to stumble across it during a search: link Don't forget to save it.....it's priceless. Quote
flameproof Posted February 24, 2007 at 01:10 AM Report Posted February 24, 2007 at 01:10 AM ..and you didn't fix it because...? Because some time later I didn't bother about those minor things. In learning I mainly look forward and seldom look back..... I wonder why Pimsleur does not make their scripts available for those of us who need to see the words? They follow the audio only principle. When you started to learn your mothertongue, have you had a script? Actually I like to have something to look at too, but I also think it helped me GREATLY that I made the script myself, rather then just have it on hand. Here is the best Pimsleur resource........ Wow! It is!!! Unfortunately only for Mandarin I. And there is no II & III. But there are a few more wordlists in that directory: http://213.157.250.41/data/jeziki/Chinese/ Also worth a look: http://213.157.250.41/data/jeziki/ A little hint if you like the 234 page long PDF, I do.....: Print every odd (1,3,5 ect.) page on A5 paper turn then around, then print every even page on the back I then have a double sided A5 booklet (after doing the holes and getting a binder). It's more handy and saves toner/ink. I may even try A6...... Quote
