what's a contact?

looking at school and visa websites, i find that as a foreigner i need a "sponsor" or a "contact" when i apply. Are these the same thing? What's required? May i ask my professor, who is (temporarily) out of China right now? If so, does that obligate her to write letters or massage the guanxi or vouch that i'm an ok human being? Or is it just a formality?
