KiraKira Posted March 5, 2007 at 05:30 PM Report Posted March 5, 2007 at 05:30 PM I was reading some grammar about the word order and decided for comparison and fun to try and make the largest sentence I could in english and see what order everything fell when translated into chinese, obviously I need help though As far as word order I tallied up something like this: [Time Adverb][sUBJECT][General Adverb][???] [???][Negation][VERB][Tense][OBJECT][Modal particle] * I didn't know what place 也 and 在 would go in, but read before the verb. ** I know a lot of it is optional, and you can for example negate different things *** The [Tense] after the verb is reffering to 了 How would one translate the following sentence into Mandarin ??? : [ Yesterday, you also quickly didn't eat lunch at school ? ] Quote
Koneko Posted March 5, 2007 at 06:58 PM Report Posted March 5, 2007 at 06:58 PM Yesterday, you also quickly didn't eat lunch at school ? 昨天你也没在学校赶快把午饭给吃了。 I think both English and Chinese sentences sound a bit weird. K. Quote
nipponman Posted March 5, 2007 at 08:50 PM Report Posted March 5, 2007 at 08:50 PM 昨天你也没在学校赶快把午饭给吃了。 Hmmm, this sentence seems convoluted to me (though, i'm by no means an expert). While, admittedly, the english is also convoluted and could easily rephrased as: you also didn't eat lunch at school quickly yesterday, right? This is much more manageable, though there is still too much information. So, my chinese attempt is: 昨天,你也在学校午饭吃得很慢吧? I think thats better, but again, I'm no expert. I don't understand why you use 把 and 给 constructs here koneko, any particular grammatical reason that I'm missing? Quote
KiraKira Posted March 5, 2007 at 09:24 PM Author Report Posted March 5, 2007 at 09:24 PM With regards to my sentence, I just wanted to get all the grammar into it for people to re-arrange and made the order more chinese-like. You can use a more natural one if you want as long as it displays where things would go in a long sentence. Quote
Koneko Posted March 5, 2007 at 09:38 PM Report Posted March 5, 2007 at 09:38 PM "把...给..." can be used in 陈述句 or 祈使句 E.g. 陈述句 我把饭给吃了。 E.g. 祈使句 你把他给叫来。 K. Quote
againstwind Posted March 6, 2007 at 03:10 PM Report Posted March 6, 2007 at 03:10 PM Yesterday, you also quickly didn't eat lunch at school ? I tried to use a more natural expression: 昨天你在学校吃饭不也吃得很慢吗? Quote
Koneko Posted March 6, 2007 at 03:35 PM Report Posted March 6, 2007 at 03:35 PM Thanks againstwind! From your example, I have come out with another suggestion. How about:- 你昨天也不在学校把午饭吃得很慢吗? K. Quote
jukebox Posted March 7, 2007 at 02:16 AM Report Posted March 7, 2007 at 02:16 AM Thanks againstwind! From your example, I have come out with another suggestion. How about:- 你昨天也不在学校把午饭吃得很慢吗? K. "不也", actually, is used in an affirmative sentence, which conveys a slightly stronger mood. 你昨天在学校不也吃得很慢。(given that 你在家吃得很慢), which means 你吃得慢. 你昨天不也来了。(imply that 你假装不知道), which means 你来了. For 你昨天也不在学校把午饭吃得很慢吗? I don't think this is a good one. It's not natural and given the opposite meaning. 你昨天在学校午饭吃得也不快吗?/你昨天在学校午饭吃得也很慢吗?/你昨天在学校也[bold]没有[/bold]把午饭吃得很快吗? would be better. "也不" on the other hand is used to describe things which were opposite to what you expected. for example, 你昨天在学校午饭也不快点吃。(which could mean you should have lunch more quickly) 你昨天也不在学校吃午饭。(imply that 'You should't eat at home yesterday.') 你昨天也不来。(imply that "I thought you would come, but actually you didn't." ) Quote
