Iam studying in China { x visa} since sept 2005 , it has been 17 months since i landed in China . I want to convert my X VISA TO Z VISA. My X visa is upto 2010.

1] Is it safe to work on a student visa ?

2] do i need the university confirmation letter to get a working visa ?

3] what should i do to obtain a residence visa ? or should i first get a Z visa to obtain residence permit ..

4] should i wait till 2010 to convert my visa or can I do it now ?

5] how can i get a residence permit ? is it given only for a year ?

I WILL BE REALLY THANKFUL TO U ..

I can't answer all of your questions. but:

2] do i need the university confirmation letter to get a working visa ?

- Usually a letter from the company employing you (is the uni your new employee) plus some proof that they are allowed to employ foreigners. There probably is a list of documents required, in english, in your local PSB office or embassy office.

3] what should i do to obtain a residence visa ? or should i first get a Z visa to obtain residence permit ..

- You get the Z visa first, then within one month of that time, you apply for the residence permit.

5] how can i get a residence permit ? is it given only for a year ?

Your employer should help with the required paperwork and documents. You go to the PSB with the documents and your passport with a Z visa inside and pay the relevant fees. Usually the permit is for a year each time though there are longer ones available under some conditions.
