dynaemu Posted March 26, 2007 at 05:07 AM Report Posted March 26, 2007 at 05:07 AM Question... Is there a possible way to make a chinese given name (not surname) to yourself without the help of a native? Cause Im thinking, when a baby is born.. they dont really know it well enough to name it according to their personality, or do they wait to name it til much later? Anyway ^^ Thank you very much for helping. Quote
Lu Posted March 26, 2007 at 05:45 AM Report Posted March 26, 2007 at 05:45 AM The risk of naming yourself is that you end up with a name that is un-Chinese, weird, stupid or otherwise undesirable. That's why it's better to consult a native speaker. Chinese babies are named pretty soon after they are born (afaik), and if they have personality traits in their name it is more often traits that the parents hope the child will have (brave, smart, beautiful) than what they actually observe in their child. dynaemu Posted March 26, 2007 at 08:26 PM Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 at 08:26 PM I know how chinese naming works.... There are lists and guides on it.... Or are these unaccurate? Quote
Shadowdh Posted March 26, 2007 at 08:50 PM Report Posted March 26, 2007 at 08:50 PM I had the help of two of my Chinese friends who knew me quite well. They also "converted" my surname to a Chinese version... as has been said it is best if you can get a native speaker to help... Quote
zozzen Posted April 1, 2007 at 04:54 PM Report Posted April 1, 2007 at 04:54 PM take a list of the "most" common names and you can easily pick up a name with pleasant meaning, although it's hard to get an unique name by this way. Check http://input.foruto.com/compare/dl/hknames.htm ( for girls' name ) Making an unique good chinese name is not only a problem to foreigners, it's also a big headaches to most caring parents. Some even consult fortune tellers for a good one. There's no easy way to be good at rhythm, characters and fengshui . Quote
cintiaghimel Posted April 7, 2007 at 01:06 AM Report Posted April 7, 2007 at 01:06 AM I'm sorry but I had to mention this...a couple of years ago, before I "became chinese" I heard a story that the chinese babies were named as soon as they started their first words. The parents listened to the syllables the baby said and voila! The baby's got a name...I'm ashamed to say that I believed that:oops: Quote
