Hello!

Am looking for some competent human advice on a translation

Am looking for the chinese translation of the following:

defender

or

protector

(the above refer to the meaning of my name in the original Greek root)

future as in the past, the present and the future

i tried with some of my chinese friends, but they based their comments on terms found in online dictionaries ... not really what i was looking for ...

Can anybody help? Thanks

This is what i've come up with so far:

Future

将来

將來

未来

Protector

保护者

保護者

Defender

守护者

If you are just translating a word in isolation, then the translations you provided are all correct, however translating words in isolation often doesn't work well if you then try to combine such words together. Perhaps if you explain a bit about what you want the translations for, and in what context they will be used, someone can provide a more meaningful translation.

imron,

thanks for your reply ... i would like a tattoo done using one of those words ... but I want to make sure that the lettering is right...

not looking to put those words together though

each word will be a tattoo so: the meaning of my name (defender or protector) would be on one tattoo

and, the word for future would be another one ... does it make sense?!?!

thx

The thing to remember is that even if the words more or less say what you want, it's entirely possible for the tattoo artist to completely screw it up/draw it poorly if they aren't familiar with Chinese, or another common thing is that the characters will be written using a font similar to what you would find in a newspaper - which kind of destroys the artistic nature of the tattoo.

In Chinese traditional stories, if there are treasure in a cave, there will be a protector, normally he is a big snake, with a bucket-wide waist and two car-light-like eyes. They are called "保护神".

The soldiers are respected as "卫士" and "钢铁卫士".

The kings' protectors are called 锦衣卫 or 御林军 , 侍卫,御前侍卫 depending the various dynasties.

Well, in many WuXia novels, the factions' ower are "帮主". Their protector do many affairs, including proctecting 帮主, They are "护法" or 护法使者. Normally, there two :左护法,右护法。

In Buddhism, there are "护法" or 护法使者, or 使者. They are Buddha's male angle. They are protectors of Buddhism and our people, I think. Also there are many orther "使者" ,for example , ZhuBaJie, in the "Western Journey "/ "story of a monkey", was promised as "净坛使者" that is to clean the sacrifice desks.

"保镖" is hired to proctect during a journey or on business. Their corporation is "镖局"。 Nowdays, presidents have many 保镖, but there aren't 镖局 in Chian main land. Maybe it became to be "保安公司".

I recommand you "护法"!!

You may want to think about future in the figurative sense.

such as destiny or fate.

缘分 (yuan fen)

or simply 缘 yuan means destiny. It is the start-crossed lover kind of romantic destiny .

fate is another word which I forgetting a the moment.

the trouble with 将来, 未来, and that is it is very literal, that which is to come. time meaning of future. what which has not come yet.

You choice, though you do know in China tattoos are seen as gang tags much more than the US or other places. (Though some martial artists have it as well.)

Have fun,

Simon:)

I think 将来 does carry more than just the literal sense of time, and is as good as, if not better than, the English word "future" for a tattoo.

I don't think this captures a sense of time so much. It's more like "future prospects"。

Another word you can try. is fate

命运

ming yun

as in your life course to come.
