roddy Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:34 AM Report Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:34 AM Are there any non-fast food coffee places around Beishida / Xizhimen that are open relatively early (before 9am). Tube Station I believe opens only at 10 (they used to open at 8, if you didn't mind them mopping around your feet), Twelve Oaks I think opens at nine, Our Lounge told me something along the lines of '9.30. But it's better if you don't come till ten.' Library I don't know, but that's a bit out of range, especially as I'm coming from the Xizhimen end. I guess Citi at Jindian Huayuan might be open early, but I don't like the place very much. Basically just looking for somewhere for a seat and a coffee round about 8am. Currently making use of the east gate McD's and the nearest KFC, but that gets old pretty quickly. And I always end up tempted by a McMuffin. What about the 18Y all you can drink place, is that open early? Quote
heifeng Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:46 AM Report Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:46 AM the 18y places are 24 hr, right? At least the one across from the east gate of BNU, 2nd floor, use to be as of last spring when I definitely would get my 18 yuan worth by staying for as close to 24 hours as I could before getting sick from eating too many of the guazi and other snacks they give you...However, I've only been there once since they remodeled it and threw in a hair salon next store, but they still have some nice booths inside....I am still under the impression it is 24 hours, but if you are walking by, you could ask the staff to be sure. Places that open early and have seating, but may not necessarily have coffee: Probably no coffee (until lunch when they have zhenzhu naicha or something similar) just funky burnt tasting doujiang, but jitian xiaochi opens at 6 and has a ton of places to sit until the lunch crowd comes in.... Also, in Xiao xitian, walking towards the pailou there is a bakery on the left with those seats that are really swings, I am guessing they might have something 'similar' to coffee, but have no idea when they open. Bakeries should (ideally) open early, right? (If I take a stroll down that way I'll ask....oh yeah this reminds me I never verified the hand weights question....oops) Quote
roddy Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:56 AM Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 at 02:56 AM Hmmm, I'm going to need drinkable coffee if I'm getting up that early in the morning. Bakeries do do coffee, but it's often not the finest. We should start Thats Xiaoxitian magazine to gather all this information together. We can put the guy in the 报刊亭 at the BNU east gate under concerts, as he was practicing his erhu when I was buying my paper yesterday morning. Then there's the Middle-Aged Man's Rollerblading Club which has been meeting outside my building recent afternoons, the Fantastic Chip Stall just up the road (just like UK chippy chips, but sprinkled with 自然口味 spices, whatever they are). It's all happening. Quote
heifeng Posted April 28, 2007 at 11:16 AM Report Posted April 28, 2007 at 11:16 AM Follow up: Ok, so I actually walked into the place I mentioned above and here are the details: Location: enter into xiao xitian (from the pailou), keep walking and it's on your right BEFORE kingdom gardens, with a sign that says MILCHK COFFEE, the chinese is just mei li ji. (beware there is another smaller one across from kingdom gardens, but I don't think that one had coffee) Time: Opens 7 am Seating: In the back (by the flashing neon and lights) there is a lounge type arrangement with secluded, private type seating. I was pretty surprised, I just thought it was the hanging seats in front by the window... Price: The bakery price was equivalent to those jinfeng bakeries, but their coffee and teas were 15 yuan or so. I didn't drink any, but I am wondering if it is actually good since it is more than the 4 yuan I would have guessed it should have been.(or at least the going rate of zhenzhu naicha) In conclusion, nice seating inside and it opens early. Coffee quality, I guess you'll still have to be the judge:mrgreen: Oh yeah, for our 'that's xxt" by the subway they have the old ladies that do their lil' dance at night....yeah, there's an actually name for that...just can't think of it right now. also xiao sichuan is still undergoing construction. Their food was not bad... Quote

Brian US Posted May 24, 2011 at 12:51 AM Report Posted May 24, 2011 at 12:51 AM I know this is an old topic, but does anyone know a cheap place to buy ground coffee around Haidian? I have a French press, but I have exhausted my year supply of coffee brought from home. I hate the sugary Nescafe mixes and I think Starbucks has small packages for 80 kuai. Was thinking about going to the Carrefour in Zhongguancun to check out the international section. Quote
fanglu Posted May 24, 2011 at 01:21 AM Report Posted May 24, 2011 at 01:21 AM Carrefour in Zhongguancun Pretty sure they sell coffee Quote
Brian US Posted May 24, 2011 at 06:42 AM Report Posted May 24, 2011 at 06:42 AM Just went there, but foreign coffee was still 80-100 kuai+. Found that Nescafe has plain black instant coffee, so that will have to do for now. A good size container will set you back about 60 kuai. Quote
skylee Posted May 24, 2011 at 07:53 AM Report Posted May 24, 2011 at 07:53 AM I think Nescafe Goldblend / Gold is quite good. Instant coffe of the dutch brand Douwe Egberts is also quite good, I think. Quote
