Hello everyone,

I was checking out my dictionaries about the verb "to trust"

Now the following problem isn't really about the verb "trust" itself but rather about many words in Chinese.

Anyways, my dictionary gives me:

信任

信托

信赖

凭信

Now how do I know which one I should use? I'm assuming the use of one 汉字 over another one depends on the context.

How about if I say: "I trust you." Which one of the aforementioned 汉字 should I use?

我信任你

Is that correct?

On a side note, I'm using Wenlin and 金山, are there any other dictionaries out there who are really worth it?

Try looking them up in reverse, or in a Chinese-Chinese dictionary. That should give you an idea of the connotation of each word. For example, 信任 in 金山 gives

信任 [C-E Concise Dictionary]

trust in

rely

accredit

believe

confide in

credit

faith

trust

while 委托 gives

委托 [C-E Concise Dictionary]

consign

devolve

entrust

leave

submit

trust

commission

The difference between the two should be quite obvious from this.

If you use 'trust' to express 'to believe' or 'have confidence in', it's doubtless correct.

or just "我相信你"

Agree with gougou, a Chinese-Chinese dictionary is essential for Chinese learners, especially, if you are not a beginner any more.
