Jeffu Posted April 19, 2007 at 01:34 PM Report Posted April 19, 2007 at 01:34 PM It is possible, but not good at all in written Chinese. The sentence should be already complete when you say "这是我的第一次". Now you add "来上海" after the sentence, it actually functions to explain what "我的第一次" is, which is more "spoken" you know. (This kinda expression happens frequently in oral Chinese.) What I need to point out is there should be a "pause" between "这是我的第一次" and "来上海" when you say it. Quote
yonglin Posted April 19, 2007 at 04:40 PM Report Posted April 19, 2007 at 04:40 PM No, you cannot. Putting a phrase within " " and entering it into any search engine is usually quite a good indicator of what you can and cannot say. My guess at explaining this would be that "my first time in..." is quite idiomatic in English. It doesn't really make sense to "own" your first time in Shanghai (in the sense of using the possessive "my"). The way of saying this in Chinese would be more like "This is the first time I come to Shanghai". Leaving the more technical explanations for the more proficient.... Quote
dan ni er Posted April 20, 2007 at 07:53 AM Report Posted April 20, 2007 at 07:53 AM I think in spoken chinese it wouldn't matter at all if you said that - this is has been confirmed by my Chinese girlfriend. Spoken Chinese is very flexible in this sense. However, if you were to write the sentence, the "de" should be omitted. Hope this is of use. Quote
HashiriKata Posted April 20, 2007 at 04:02 PM Report Posted April 20, 2007 at 04:02 PM It's interesting to note that when 来上海 in 这是我的第一次来上海 is moved forwards to the beginning, the sentence seems to be more readily accepted by native speakers: 来上海, 这是我的第一次. Quote
