When you read numbers in English you read them in multiples of 3 characters, i.e. x thousands, x millions. When you read numbers in Chinese you read them in multiples of 4 characters. It is a bit like instead of reading 123456789 as "123,456,789", you read it instead as "1,2345,6789"

Trillion is called 兆.

But 兆 is more frequently used in Japan and Taiwan owing to the small face value of their currencies.

From Skylee's post, but I needed to correct and add additional information:

903401020876 -> 九千零三十四億一百零二萬[零]八百七十六

This is how I count –

1st digit - 個

2nd digit - 十

3rd digit - 百

4th digit - 千

5th digit - 萬

6th digit - 十萬

7th digit - 百萬

8th digit - 千萬

9th digit - 億

10th digit - 十億

11th digit - 百億

12th digit - 千億

零 = zero or place holder

The above is used by many people in counting numbers below 10^12 [which really isn't correct. See explanation below].

This is also used:

903401020876 ->

small numbers: 十萬 = 億 & 十 億 = 兆

1st digit - 個

2nd digit - 十

3rd digit - 百

4th digit - 千

5th digit - 萬

6th digit - 億

7th digit - 兆

8th digit - 十兆

9th digit - 百兆

10th digit - 千兆

11th digit - 萬兆

12th digit - 億兆

13th digit - 兆兆

903401020876 -> 九千零三十四億一百零二萬零八百七十六

large numbers: 萬萬 = 億 & 萬億 = 兆

1st digit - 個

2nd digit - 十

3rd digit - 百

4th digit - 千

5th digit - 萬

6th digit - 十萬

7th digit - 百萬

8th digit - 千萬

9th digit - 億

10th digit - 十億

11th digit - 百億

12th digit - 千億

13th digit - 兆

14th digit - 十兆

15th digit - 百兆

16th digit - 千兆

Skylee actually used the second system I've posted here which is correct, but with one missing place holder.

small numbers:

903401020876 = disqualified as a small number, because it's not less than or equal to 10^12.

large numbers:

903401020876 = 九億零三千四百零一兆零二萬零八百七十六

兆 = 7th digit in small numbers, 13th digit in large numbers.

But in scientific and mathematical calculations:

10^12, 10^16, 10^20, 10^24[兆 = 10^12 in this series]

10^24, 10^28, 10^32, 10^36[兆 = 10^24 in this series]

10^36, 10^40, 10^44, 10^48[兆 = 10^36 in this series]

10^48, 10^52, 10^56, 10^60[兆 = 10^48 in this series]

In summary,

兆 = shao. This character could mean 1 million [7th digit in small numbers], or 1 trilllion [13th digit in large numbers], or for numbers greater than 10^12, it could also mean 10^12, 10^24, 10^36, or 10^48 depending on what series you use. I know it's confusing, but be consistent and tell people what you're using.

This is interesting.
