kaox0018 Posted May 2, 2007 at 04:04 PM Report Posted May 2, 2007 at 04:04 PM ok, here the passage: ...捕快大人一走,小辮子便開始換衣... does 便 mean 就 or 便利 or both? Quote
cutty Posted May 2, 2007 at 04:44 PM Report Posted May 2, 2007 at 04:44 PM 便 means "as soon as" As soon as he left, she started to change clothes Quote
L-F-J Posted May 3, 2007 at 02:26 AM Report Posted May 3, 2007 at 02:26 AM it seems 一 is the word that gives the meaning "as soon as" in this sentence. 便 in the second half means "then", working in conjunction with 一, in the same way 就 would. "as soon as"... "then" "一"..."便/就" thats the way i read it anyhow... Quote
againstwind Posted May 3, 2007 at 04:07 AM Report Posted May 3, 2007 at 04:07 AM That's right. It is the phrase '一……就/便……' that functions. e.g. 她一回家就/便开始哭起来。 我一想到他就/便想笑。 Quote
HashiriKata Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:14 AM Report Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:14 AM ...捕快大人一走,小辮子便開始換衣...Does 小辮子 mean "a little girl" ? Does it often have this meaning? (I couldn't find this meaning in dictionaries) Quote
againstwind Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:35 AM Report Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:35 AM Don't be so sensitive, HashiriKata. I think here 小辫子 should be merely a character in a drama or novel or story. But I have no idea whether it was a girl or not. Would it be a boy living in Qing Dynasty? Anyway, it's not important. You knew its original meaning, don't you? Quote
HashiriKata Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:45 AM Report Posted May 3, 2007 at 08:45 AM Thanks againstwind! (But what do you mean by "Don't be so sensitive" ?) I assumed it's a girl only because of Cutty's translation (above) "As soon as he left, she started to change clothes." From your explanation, it seems more like a nickname rather than a word meaning a boy or girl. Am I close? (Yes, the meanings from dictictionaries are "a soft/ vulnerable spot" and also "a pigtail") Quote
