sumyl Posted May 15, 2007 at 04:47 AM Report Share Posted May 15, 2007 at 04:47 AM Hey, I have a tablet pc, and I was wondering if there are any relatively cheap software programs out there that would allow me to look up a word by writing it (instead of searching by strokes, etc...). Thanks!
griz326 Posted May 15, 2007 at 02:06 PM Report Share Posted May 15, 2007 at 02:06 PM If you can use handwriting recognition to fill in text boxes and web forms, then perhaps Wenlin will work. stephanhodges Posted June 2, 2007 at 07:46 AM Report Share Posted June 2, 2007 at 07:46 AM I assume you've installed Chinese language support? If so, you can enable handwritting recognition Control Panel => Regional and Language Options 2nd tab "Languages" is where you install Chinese, if you haven't added it yet. Then, click on the "Details" button on that 2nd tab. In the bottom window, called "Installed Services" (attached picture 1) you can add Chinese, if you haven't already. From this window, click on it's "Advanced" tab. There, you can enable text services for other programs, such as notepad, etc. I'm not using that item right now, so I am not sure if it works for Chinese. Anyway, the TIP (Tablet Input Panel) will let you write Chinese quite well. Try out the free Voice Recognition too (attached picture 2), and let me know. I haven't tried that one yet either. BTW, you can get an authorized version of Wenlin for about $129, if I recall. There's a company in China that sells it. They are linked to from the Wenlin site, so they really are authorized resellers. And, they will ship for free. I use that all the time with my pen to write on the screen. stephanhodges Posted June 2, 2007 at 07:49 AM Report Share Posted June 2, 2007 at 07:49 AM BTW, there's another Microsoft product call MUI (multi user interface) which allows you to run the computer in multiple languages. It provides about 95+% of a completly localized version. Must have English version of Windows to install it however. Also, they don't sell it retail. What they don't tell you is that you can get it with the MSDN subscription, and (possibly) with the technet subscriptions. Of course, this doesn't help if you don't have those either... xianu Posted June 4, 2007 at 04:29 PM Report Share Posted June 4, 2007 at 04:29 PM This is a related yet different question for tablet PC users: I bought the Hanyu Da cidian on CD rom a couple years ago. It installed and worked beautifully on my desktop (running Win 2000) and my laptop (running Win XP). (By the way, this is a wonderful dictionary for cutting and pasting either from the text, or from the dictionary to the text). The problem was when I bought my tablet PC, with WinXP and Office 2003, I can't get the program to fully install, and it won't work. I suspect the problem is the Tablet PC, and I am wondering if anyone else has had problems with the tablet platform and other software?
