but perhaps the second one is more colloquial, while the first one looks like it would be used in writing

btw, does 大家 always have to be used with 都? 大家都知道 vs. 大家知道?

You were right first time, geek_frappa, with your title to this thread! :D You can say “大家知道”as well as "大家都知道”.

When 大家 is the subject of the sentence, 都 very often follows, but it is not essential.

lol, I wasn't sure at all...i just remember someone telling me that 大家 is usually used with 都。Is adding 都 more grammatically correct? In other words, would your writing look more "educated," if you use 都 or it doesn't matter at all?
