brokensword Posted May 17, 2007 at 12:15 PM Report Posted May 17, 2007 at 12:15 PM 朋友们,你们好! I work in a hospital and have some questions. 1) Regarding cough (咳嗽): What is the correct term for dry cough, is it 干咳 or 干燥? 2) Regarding birdflu (禽流感): How to ask: a) Did you travel outside the country recently? or B) Did you go abroad the last 2 months? 3) I'm going to take some (of your) blood for testing, [so that your condition will be more clearer] - or sound to that effect Thanks in advance. I think the correct term for dry cough is 干咳。 2) Regarding birdflu (禽流感): How to ask:a) Did you travel outside the country recently? 你最近是否出国旅游了?/ 你最近是否有出国或出境旅游? B) Did you go abroad the last 2 months? 最近两个月你是否出国了?/ 最近两个月你是否出国或出境? 3) I'm going to take some (of your) blood for testing, [so that your condition will be more clearer] 我要(给你)抽点血做血样检测,以便我能更确切地了解你的身体状况。 “brokensword” ? The name reminds me of the word “月缺不改光,剑折不改刚 the crescent moon won’t lost its brightness, a broken sword won’t lost its hardness. ”The name is very poetic! Thanks! Quote
brokensword Posted May 18, 2007 at 01:22 PM Author Report Posted May 18, 2007 at 01:22 PM Thanks so much. Yeah i find brokensword so mystical, but more of a reminder of tony leung. Quote

redApple Posted June 6, 2007 at 02:46 PM Report Posted June 6, 2007 at 02:46 PM I think the translation posted up is not so well. It is usually say as below:(more native) a) Did you travel outside the country recently? 你 前段时间 出国了? ni3 qian2duan4shi2jian1 chu1guo2le ? you recently travel outside the country 前段时间 means "several days ago" or "several weeks ago" alse can means "several months ago".When you talk about anything happen before you can use "前段时间" in anywhere in your sentence. You also can use "前些日子",this word is more about"several days ago" B) Did you go abroad the last 2 months? 你 前两个月 出国了? ni2 qian2liang3ge4yue4 chu1guo2le ? you the last 2 months go abroad In fact this sentence is the same meaning with last one in chinese.前两个月 is not exactly means "two month",it is just a oral use which means "several months before"(uauslly less than five months.) 3) I'm going to take some (of your) blood for testing, [so that your condition will be more clearer] - or sound to that effect "I'm going to take some (of your) blood for testing",you can say 我 要 给你 验一下血。 wo3 yao4 gei3ni3 yan4yi1xia4xue3 I going to for you take some blood for testing. "验血"means "take blood for testing". I add "一下" between"验血" just for the same purpers as you put "some" between "take" and " blood". Just we used to say that. Ha~I want this would be help. And I'm willing to help if anyone have question like this. my msn phyxose@hotmail.com May everyone has a good time in China! Quote
brokensword Posted June 8, 2007 at 12:17 PM Author Report Posted June 8, 2007 at 12:17 PM Thanks redApple. Your post is very much helpful. Some more questions though: 1) I notice that a) and B) of your post are actually not in a question form. I was under the impression that I can just up my intonation at the end of the sentence, to make it a question? 2) Can I just say: 你最近出国了吗? or 你最近有没有出国? 3) what's the difference between 出国 vs 出国旅游? 4) How about 旅行? 5) As a follow up after taking blood test, how do I say: a) You stay here for about one or 2 hours B) I will give you medicine to stop your pain c) I will give you medicine to stop your giddiness d) I will give you injection to stop your headache e) I will review you in 2 hours I especially like your version of 我要给你验一下血 Thanks Quote
redApple Posted June 15, 2007 at 05:38 PM Report Posted June 15, 2007 at 05:38 PM 1) I notice that a) and B) of your post are actually not in a question form. I was under the impression that I can just up my intonation at the end of the sentence, to make it a question? yes,my words is not strictly according to the grammar,so do the most chinese. In fact, if you spoke something strictly according to the grammar, that would not sound native enough on the contrary. I was under the impression that I can just up my intonation at the end of the sentence, to make it a question? usually it is. “你喜欢吃苹果” =You likes eat apple. “你喜欢吃苹果?"up the intonation at the end = Do you like eat apple?(but not other fruit) "去" = yes,I want to go.(use it when someone ask you if you want to go) "去?" =Do you go there? (use it when you ask someone if he really want to go somethere) but this based on you correct pronounce or intonation, else the people would confused. Because they don't know weather it is a question or just you inexpertness pronounce. Also,in the simple-expression style of question ,different accent on each word have diffrent meannings.Of couse, you can ignore it before you get used to. Quote
