In my textbook, it says 批 is a measure word, but does not give what it is a measure word for. Can anyone tell me what 批 is the measure word for...?

A group or batch of something.

when you say a "group" or "batch", can that be for people or animals? or is it for inanimate objects (like "a batch of widgets")?

It can be used for both, e.g.

这种产品已经停产了，目前市面上的是它最后一批货了

Here it refers to a batch of goods.

今天中午时分，又有一批国内旅客从马尔代夫返沪。

Here it refers to a group of tourists.
