wix Posted May 27, 2003 at 12:52 AM Report Posted May 27, 2003 at 12:52 AM According to Amazon.com the 3rd edition of The Rough Guide to China will be/was published in May 2003. Has anybody seen it yet? What is your opinion? Are there any major improvements on the previous edition? Quote
roddy Posted May 27, 2003 at 01:20 AM Report Posted May 27, 2003 at 01:20 AM I haven't seen a copy, but there was a review of it on the Oriental List mailing list recently. Basically, it got absolutely slated, and the reviewer suggested that they hadn't actually gone to China, just sat at home with the 2nd edition and added in some snippets from the Thorntree. From the examples given it did sound like it had missed out some pretty important stuff - like not updating the section of budget accomodation in Beijing, which has really changed over the last few years. If you want I'll see if I still have the email, Roddy Quote
Guest Wang Ke Zhou Posted June 29, 2003 at 01:28 AM Report Posted June 29, 2003 at 01:28 AM Given that no guide on China is worth much for very long how does rough guide v2 or v3 stack up against LP? I've grown really tired of LP's snotty attitude and lack of background about what you are looking at..... Quote
Guest Wang Ke Zhou Posted June 29, 2003 at 01:30 AM Report Posted June 29, 2003 at 01:30 AM Mr Roddy, would you mind posting that email? It sounds like their is a simmilar review on Amazon.... Quote
roddy Posted June 30, 2003 at 03:50 AM Report Posted June 30, 2003 at 03:50 AM I don't have a copy of the email anymore, and the Oriental List (the email list through which I got it) unfortunately doesn't maintain an archive. General opinion seems to be that the LP is your best bet, and while it is inevitably sketchy in parts, it does a good all-round job. Roddy Quote
mr. fanglang Posted November 10, 2005 at 01:27 PM Report Posted November 10, 2005 at 01:27 PM 2005 edition of Rough Guide China just out and it seems they have made some substantial updates, more so than the last one. This is based on my reading of the yunnan section, at least. In fact, it lists some jems (places, guesthouses) that the 2005 LP China does not. Quote
