is anyone aware of study opportunities, either in university or private school, way down

south in 西双版纳? i assume the only choice(s) would be in jinghong. i'm afraid kunming

has gotten too big and exciting for me. i could go for inner mongolia, except for the

weather.

多走走,多看看。这样比呆在学校或城市都好。

Briefly considered doing this myself a year or so ago....

Seems there is a college in Jinghong (although only Zhuanke): 西双版纳职业技术学院. Guess that'd translate to something like Xishuangbanna Technical and Vocational College. According to their website, http://cn.hbksw.com/yunnan/yndx/20070426557.html, since 1994 they've had all of 16 international students from European and American countries. Guess that means they're at least open to foreigners studying there.

You could just get an F visa, then self-study and maybe do some volunteer work with an NGO or whatever. If you were to do that, though, you might consider Ruili. It feels a bit like Jinghong but with far fewer tourists.

There's also Honghe University in Mengzi, which isn't all that close to Xishuangbanna but apparently has a lot of Vietnamese exchange students. I really like Honghe, but didn't get a great impression of Mengzi (admittedly just passing through). Seems like it'd be pretty hardcore, though.
